Hi to all Britvics!!

I am new to this site, so a bit unsure how to use it!!

We are in the process of our visa, just waiting for our case numbers to come from DIAC
and it seems to be taking forever!!

We have friends in Point Cook who are absolutely loving it have have recently put a deposit down on a house. Hopefully when our visa is granted (been advised around March/April time) we are going to rent in this area as a base and fully explore Melbourne.

We have narrowed down our search to the Mornington penninsular and Geelong and wondered whether anyone could advise us of any really nice areas and places to avoid!!

We have two girls - Ella 9 and Libby 2 and would love to hear about schools and nurseries. My husband is a barber and has owned his own very busy barber shop for 19 years, he proposes to start again and open up his own shop. When we have been looking on job websites etc there doesnt seem to be that many jobs available or even advertise for mens hairdresssing. My friend told me he would make a killing in point cook as they dont seem to exsist there!!

Sorry if im asking loads of questions, but there is only so much info you can get from the internet.

Be really grateful if somebody could help!

Hi Joanne, and welcome. We've only been here seven weeks so we're still sussing out where we want to live long term, but we've driven around Point Cook and the other western suburbs. The majority looks nice although on our first drive round a couple of areas felt a bit Stepford (we could imagine synchronised mowing on Sunday mornings to get all the lawns the same height). But then we'd turn the next corner and see a street that looked like a really comfortable place to live. Overall it seems a nice area and we are likely to buy and build somewhere out there. Probably not in Point Cook itself as the prices there have crept up in the last couple of years and would stretch our budget more than we'd like, but a little further out looks promising. Down the other side of the bay Carrum is lovely, but really we ooohed at almost everything between Carrum and Elwood. Money still means we'll probably go west, but there're a lot of nice areas down that side.

Good luck with it all.

..like a Britvic'er....but weirder...
Hi guys!

We live in Lara (emigrated Oct 10th) and highly recommend it! We like Geelong too, but we steered towards Lara as it is a bit further from the mother in law in Geelong! (only joking....well, theres a bit of truth there i guess!)

I know Stu & Maddy (Madster) are from Geelong and they love it too!

It seems most from here are from Melbourne from what i can gather? (might as well be called Melbrits?) Only kiddin.. ;)

Seriously though, Geelong is wicked....love this area! And it's close enough to 'dip into' the city too as it's an easy train ride away.

The schools in Lara seem ace, one of ours starts there end of Jan, so we can give you a better idea when he's started, but we have been to a few open days etc and it looks to be much better than the school he went to in the UK.

The barbers shop sounds a great idea! We could be the first customer as i've been meaning to get our son booked in since we got here, but alas...keep forgetting!

Best of luck with the whole thing Jo, Paul & family :)

Hi Joanne and Paul

We have been renting in Highton Geelong, and are a family of 4, me, OH, daughter of 16 and son of 12, been here 2 years. Bought land in Torquay but Highton, Grovedale, some of Belmont, Wandana Heights, Queens Park - lovelyand expensive, seem good to live in, have friends in all areas and all seem happy. We are moving out of area to have more space around us more of a country feel. Geelong is a good place to live plenty on offer with sports, entertainment, shopping, beaches etc.
Son was at Highton Primary and I think Maddie has signed her daughter to start there too. There is always good and bad points to schools as long as you are upfront and go in when you are not happy. I am sure everyone would say the same. You will probably find that Craig Salmon the principle there would answer any emails sent, he was the only one to reply to mine when I was still in the UK. Schools seem to like you to be here and living before they speak to you.

The other side of the bay is lovely too, my decision on where to live was made as we came over to a job.
Good luck with all your plans.

Like Cazzy, I live in Highton but may be moving to Adelaide in a few months. Can't fault Geelong, so far. Thought I'd include some pics (above ^^) so you get a bit of a feel of the area. Haven't recommended any areas as I feel that it comes down to personal choice.

Here's a few pics of Eastern Beach:

Hi Jo

We've got our permanent visa, had it since Sept 2007, have sold our house and cars, living in rented accommodation and itchy to get out to Melbourne now.

We originally decided in Mentone but I found it to be too presumptious, expensive, very similar to the UK, houses not that large either, and just generally more expensive then we hoped, so we're now deciding on Geelong.

I noticed that your girls are the same age as mine, Albany is 9 and Baylee will be 3 in April 2008, would love to meet up if you do end up in Geelong.

Keep posting... take care and good luck....

Winnie
