Hello

I hope you don't mind but I have modified one detail of Gracie-Lou's post. I think it is a great way of meeting friends but I do feel as a Mum of a 16 year old and 12 year old that you should please keep details very basic, that is do not give full names and where you live and what school you go to. It may be better to give that info as a PM if you want to chat more with someone.

Just want to keep you all safe. :waving:

Hello everyone!
My name's Hannah and I hopefully going to be moving to Australia with my parents roundabout april. We're headed to Victoria and I've got some questions on the school's over there.
I'm halfway through Yr10 at the moment, and I'm halfway through my GCSE coursework as well.I just want to ask, what year would I be in when I get to the schools there, what subjects do they teach, and how easy will it be to pick up my coursework from there?
At the moment I'm taking Drama, German, Performing Arts, Art and Seperate sciences as my subjects.I'm geussing that German's not taught over there, but are the rest still taught?
Long post is long:D
Thanks for reading!

Hi Hannah

Sorry you have had no replies, think this section is getting a bit more popular day by day.

My daughter is in Year seven so maybe not doing the subjects you are doing, the year you will be in will depend on when your birthday falls, my daughter actually went back a year and a half because of her age and when her birthday falls, she is a June baby.

I am not sure if this will help regarding subjects but I have looked at a web site which I can send you the details if you would like to read about it a bit more, but here are the subjects that are studied in Year ten.

Hope this helps

hey hannah!
Sorry this is a little bit late, but i dont really come onto here anymore. I dont know how useful this information will be seeming you posted this last comment like...aaages ago, but well anyway!

well, My name is Grace. I moved to australia in september- at the end of year 10, so I had done half of my GCSE's. Like you, I had taken separate sciences, german and things like that. As i had done half my gcse's i really didnt want to come over here and have to start again from scratch, but in austrlia i think there are very few schools if any that actually carry on with the gcses. It felt like all the hard work I had put in that year had gone to waste because none of the coursework matered anymore.

However, although i had to give up the whole gcse thing, I was in a good postion, because as i had taken 3 sciences for a year, i was able to get an A* certificate gcse for a single science. Of course, you wont have completed the whole of year 10, so unfortunatly you wont be able to get that aswell.

If you come over here in April (or if you are over here already of course!) you will go into year 10 most probably. I say that because the school i go to now put me in year 10, but as i looked around a few other schools some wanted to put me as far back as year 8.

I was in year 10 over here for the last 6 weeks of their school year, and i found the work exceedingly easy! I am now in year 11, and starting my VCE's. You may (or may not) know that over here you can get into uni on VCE's- you dont need to take an A level equivilent, so even though it feels like you are starting your GCSE's again from scratch, your not and you will leave school a year before you would have in england.

about the german.
again it depends on what school you go to.
Even though my school doesnt offer german as a subject, when i went in to talk to them they said that, if i were interested in doing so, a teacher there (who spoke german) would give me private tuition either in lunch or after school. Unfortunatly i didnt take it up, because i am now doing VCE's, and these are very time consuming!!!

well, I dont know if this is any use to you, or if you are still going to come out or if you know it all already, but i hope it does help!! :D If i have forgotten anything i shall write again!

Grace x

oh, it also depends on whether you are a high achiever or not- as my birthday is in may i am meant to be in year 10 still, but as i had already done my 1st year of the GSCEs and i could handle the added strain they put me a year above my age group. You can choose if you would like to do that or if you would rather stay with people your own age, but it doesnt make much of a difference.

Hey Grace,

I am unsure if you are going to get this message as it says in your last comment that you don't come on here much anymore, Well i've been in Australia about 3months now and finding it hard to settle in. I'm 17 turning 18 -- January 2009.
I see you live in Frankston South well I live in Carrum which is only 2 stops on the train -- verry close! I am also sitting Year 11 studying for my VCEs, I would of really been in year 12 according to my age, but we all thought year 11 was better suited for me. Although i have already completed my GCSE's in england i started 5months of Year 12-sixform in england, until i emigrated to Australia.
Im usually a very social person, and I have attempted to make friends here, but its proving difficult. It would be great to have English Company : ) I wwas wondering if maybe you would fancy meeting up, perhaps, go out shopping?, frankston or southlands maybe?

If so let me know, it would be great : ) especially to get to get to know someone else whos been in the same shoes as me. : )
