Can you apply from the UK or do you have to be in Aus to apply.

I have looked at this:

https://iar.ato.gov.au/iarweb/default.aspx?pid=4&sid=1&outcome=1

But not carried out the process. If you apply online do you have to provide any additional info.

I envisage ID being a problem as we will only have passport and no Aus ID. Initially we will be in short term rental property ie weeks not months.

In a nutshell how does it all work.

You have to have an Australian address to apply I think.

Lindsay Clan is right. You have to wait till you're here before you can get your TFN, but assuming you're not also an Australian citizen you can apply online with just a passport as long as the passport number is associated with the right visa on their system. From theATO website:

Permanent migrant or temporary visitors - Applying online

If you are a permanent migrant or temporary visitor to Australia you can apply for a TFN online at any time after entering Australia.

This option is available if you are a:
  • working holiday-maker
  • New Zealander (who is automatically granted a visa on arrival)
  • overseas student
  • person with a valid visa allowing you to stay in Australia indefinitely, and
  • person with a business visa.

To apply online, you need a valid passport or relevant travel documents and must be:
  • authorised to work in Australia by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) or have a valid overseas student visa
  • allowed to remain here indefinitely, and
  • in Australia when you lodge your application.
When you apply online you do not have to physically provide proof of identity documents. We will compare your personal and travel document details with DIAC’s records. When we validate your details, we will give you a receipt number.

That page also has the link for the online application.

I should mention that the process is less straightforward for anyone who has Australian citizenship but is applying for a TFN for the first time. Basically this means people with dual nationality who've never lived here before, which is the situation Amanda was in. She had to fill out the forms in the tax office in town (corner of Lonsdale and Spring St if anyone needs to know) and IIRC bring along her citizenship papers/Aussie passport as well as proof of residency to show that she was now living here.
