The Bettinsons arrived in Melbourne late on Monday. Since I landed a pretty great job in Melbourne with a great relocation allowance I treated us to business class out there. Worth it's weight in gold with all the queue jumping, lie-flat seats, no screaming babies and better food. I could get used to this :) I don't know if it's me being an original aussie (in UK for 15 years) that has made the process simple so far, I don't really think so. I'm just a bit of an obsessive researcher and before we touched down I had banking set up through NAB's great migrant banking team in London. I had an apartment booked and appointments with agents to find a longer term rental. Day one, yesterday, was a bit of a whirlwind. Mobile phones, property viewings and a bit of tourist action. Today we'll make a decision on rental, do ID interview with bank and sort out deposits and visit a nice BMW dealer I've been talking to about the car I want. The missus has only visited the far North before. She's loving it, the Melbourne food is a bit of a highlight for a start since we both love Asian food - the UK was pretty bland for our tastes when we moved out of London at least. Still pretty jet lagged but working through the big to-do list before I start work on Monday. All very high tempo and enjoyable so far. One thing, it's quite amusing that every cab we've got in Melbourne so far we appear to know more about what is where than they do! |

A phenomenon

Cabs are hopeless if you get a driver who knows where they are going you are very lucky. Times have changed I remember when they did know. My son used on on the weekend and they chap had no clues at all. Heaven help the new and the tourists. |

So, two weeks down and so much has happened. Looks at loads of apartments and settled on one which just happens to be a block away from work. My job is even better than expected, I joke my office is bigger than our old house! Great view right out into the Melbourne CBD. Got me a brand new Mini Cooper S and we had a great weekend visiting some friends in Seymour and driving back through the Yarra Valley, then later on up to the Dandenongs - we love it up there. Loving the food (highly recommended Lamaro's in South Melbourne - got tipped off about this joint by NAB's migrant banking lass based in London), things to do, and my work. Tickles me pink most aussies feel the need to apologise for the weather. I'm showing up to the office in a short-sleeve shirt! Wife mean while has had bouts of feeling a bit like fish out of water due to not knowing anyone, not having Net on at the apartment and all that jazz. However we've got some very old friends (of mine anyway) hitting Melbourne for the weekend so it should be a bit better on that front. I reckon we'll do a few months in Melbourne before moving out to the Dandenongs somewhere. Since I can start work around 10 or so, traffic wont be so bad and I can catch the train when I get bored of nipping in and out of traffic in my new mini. Yeeeah like that's going to happen soon! :) |
