I don't know if any of you ever drove the M1 past Sheffield but if you did then you would have seen the big two water cooling towers right by there - just near Meadowhall. They were a local landmark.

They're gone now. Demolished recently. Check the youtube video:

We had a 30 mile detour due to this on the Sunday morning, we were travelling from Leeds to West Midlands.

I will actually miss them, when I used to travel up to Leeds to see my grandparents I knew we were nearly there when I saw those towers and now that I live in Leeds when we saw them we knew we were nearly home.

Never mind - hopefully be in Melbourne in November.

Yeh, saw it all on BBC website, very mixed whether people thought it was a good or bad thing to do. I'm originally from Rotherham, Kimberworth actually so saw them often on my trips to Meadowhall.

You mean I'm not the only Rotherham escapee on this forum? My family owned a green grocers in Kimberworth, although I'm from Herringthorpe.

A few more from Kimberworth here as well. :waving: Me and Neil lived there for most of our lives. My mum told me about the towers being demolished when she phoned me last weekend. She said she heard the blast from their house a couple of miles away. Wonder what they plan to do with the land now??

Apparently there were loads of people up on Meadowhall Road watching it all happen. According to OH they are going to build a small Biomass Power Station on the land.
