hi all, Just wondering as we are finding it hard to sell our house at the moment what you all would think would be considered enough set up costs in Australia for 6 months. How much would we need behind us. We both will be going over to no jobs and have three smallies. My husband in australian though and his family are in Bendigo, Victoria. Any sugestions!??!

A phenomenon
Assuming you won't be living staying with the in-laws for a few weeks while you're waiting for your furniture you'll need one month's deposit and one month's rent after that.

$700 for one week hire care
$15,000 plus to buy a car
$1500 for first month's grocery bill. You'll need to stock up on basics

We came with $22,000 (10,000 pounds). It went very quickly on rent ($3,900), deposit ($4,000), car hire ($1,200) and 2 full time nursery places ($3,500) and the rest burned quickly in the first month without us realising it. Luckily we found jobs quite quickly.

Hold off buying the car - concentrate on property near public transport.

Some short term accomodation do special rates for mid term periods ie 6 weeks to 6 months - that avoids forking out for furniture etc.

You don't mention vocations which will help determine location and chance of getting employment in current situation.

Being close to the beach or a good park means big reduction in spend on keeping the kids happy and transport costs.

Stocking up on food etc would seem expensive in first month due too alot of items you use over say 6 months salts, spices, oils. But I think depending on where you shop you could get that figure down to under $500. We just did a monthly shop excluding meat which on a quarterly basis is about $225 we spent just under $300 for family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids under 5). Bear in mind we have a weekly farmers delivery for fruit/vege and milk which is about $35 per week.
