After 8 years of PC gaming,Ive given up on trying to keep a gaming spec, its just way too expensive. So,Ive opted for the xbox 360 for my gaming needs.

So,console owners, whats worth playing ? It looks like most titles are launched on both xbox and ps3 formats,so I'll be interested to read your views.

Ive opted for Grand Theft Auto 4 as my first game.Ive played gta 3,gta vice city, and gta san andreas on the PC,so I was really looking forward to this one.Magzines and websites have been going crazy with perfect 10 reviews.I'm not so sure myself.

First, graphics.Theres some great visuals going on here, but I dunno, its just not as colourful as the others. Then theres the actual game.It says I am about 20% in,an to be honest I dont feel as if its done anything thats majorly different than the previous games.Dont get me wrong,I love this game, but I just dont know if its that much of a leap forward.Maybe there is better to come as I progress.

Ive also bought Rainbox six vegas two,but havent really had a chance to play it yet.

Love the xbox marketplace.Ive already bought Worms, fantastic old game, and even better with the online play.

I'm looking for a good online shooter.I know everyone goes on about COD 4,but I was thinking either that or Battlefield Bad Company,as I am a big Battlefield 2 fan.

So as Ive said, what are you playing on your consoles ?

COD4 and Bad Company are both excellent.

Sadly I play them on the PS3 not XBox. That's for my kids mainly

I'm into COD5 World At War on PS3 right now, although haven't played it for a few weeks due to Christmas

Many thanks for the kind comments guys :) Tom will be well chuffed when i tell him! And deffo go ahead and put it on her Myspace Hevs.

He loves messing around with my guitar, but he's yet to make anything "tuneful"...but there's still time!!

He also plays the Guitar Hero guitar as if he's playing a bass guitar (ie all the strokes are upwards) which is quite weird!

I think Ive said on a post on here before, that the guitar hero (and rock band) series are great, because it gives the kids an introduction into playing music.

Theres no doubt in my mind that in five to ten years time, some band thats made it wont be saying Hendrix and the likes influenced them to pick up a guitar, its was guitar hero.

Myself,I'm just trying to recpture that gaming "mojo" that I used to have. Those games that kept you up all night, for "just one more go them I'm going to bed".I still love gaming, but its been a long while since Ive had a game thats inspired me that way.

I suppose to a degree its real life getting in the way, with a family and what have you these days.Hopefully,my all nighters with the likes of Elite,Lords of Midnight,Cannon Fodder,Goldeneye Zelda and Doom may come back one day !

I bought Bad Company for my PS3 on Wednesday and so far I'm impressed. Don't expect the depth of BF2 (or BF2149) as it's designed for a console, but it's a good shooter.

Out of interest Al,whats the PS3 doing that the Xbox isnt ? I assume the spec is a bit higher, and youve got the Blu Ray player.Any other advantages ?

My eldest son (14) has Xbox and swears by all the war/shoot them up games, he is presently no.60 in the world or something on COD5. There again all he has done during January is play Xbox for 5 hours a day.
My youngest (12) has PS3 which he goes for more of the Racing or Wrestling games and also likes to use is for DVDs.

I'm sure they would be up for a game, well atleast Kieran would on COD5.

Here's a little analysis I did of the PS3, XBox360 and Wii for someone else recently

PS3

  • Easy to navigate, attractive user interface
  • An excellent home entertainment system
  • The best Blu-Ray player on the market. Why ? Because it can be and has been upgraded when new standards emerge unlike a stand alone player.
  • Attractive Music visualisation effects including an awesome Earth simulator while chilling out to Doors, Floyd, etc
  • Plays back 98% of DivX/XVid Movies/TV from the Internet
  • Ability to store your own Music, photos and movies on the Hard Disk
  • Ability to plug in an external USB stick or hard disk (I have two 360GB drives connected to mine)
  • Play TV is an $200 box you can buy from UK (Aus in 2009) which had an HD TV encoder allowing you to use the PS3 as a PVR (ala Tivo, Sky+). I have one and it works brilliantly.
  • Astonishing graphical quality, easily better than XBox360 on games designed for PS3 (Little Big Planet, MotorStorm, etc), however about the same on games made for all the consoles (Fallout 3, Call of Duty, etc).
  • Playing on-line is FREE
  • Built in web browser for internet access through TV. Compatibility gets better eveyr month as more updates are released. Even works with Google Maps now.
  • Poor on-line experience. It's not as easy to find/join online games as there are fewer people playing than on XBox360. Generally a poor on-line experience, but you will get to play and it will work the same.
  • Really requires a lovely 1080p HDTV with HDMI to get the best
  • If your into playing backed up/copied games then your out of luck no chip (legal in Australia) exists for the PS3. Rumours have a chip coming on the market by Q2 2009
  • The PS3 has both a wired Ethernet network port and full 54Mb G WiFi built in out of the box. I actually have my my PS3 hooked into the home network and the Internet Wirelessly.
  • The PS3 can connect to any Media Server which supports DNLA(Digital Living Network Alliance) to stream video, music and photos. This includes a heap of devices like Windows Vista, Mac's and other NAS devices. On my network the PS3 picks up a Laptop running Azureus, a desktop running Windows Media Player 11 and NAS hard disk plugged into the network.
  • If you have a Sony PSP you can use the handheld to remotely connect to and control the PS3 as well as stream music, photos, videos and if you have PlayTV even live television to anywhere in the world (even your toilet!) once you have configured the network correctly.
XBox360

  • Awful User Interface, but a complete redesign has just been released which promises to make it better. UPDATE: This new "XBox Experience" is now out and is actually a lot nicer than the previous version
  • A mediocre entertainment system
  • No Blu-Ray support yet, possibly coming out in the next year. Microsoft backed the failed HD-DVD format (UPDATE: MS have confirmed that they will not be releasing a Blu-Ray drive for the XBox360, they now intend to add one to the XBox Evolution which will be their next console)
  • Plays back 90% of DivX/XVid Movies/TV from the Internet, apparently has some issues with AAC audio
  • No ability to store your own Music, photos and movies on the Hard Disk, although this might be changing soon.
  • Ability to plug in an external USB stick or hard disk although not as intunitive as PS3 (you have to change config to select alternate drives, etc)
  • No HD TV Tuner available but if your PC has one you can stream the TV from the your PC's Media Centre to your XBox. Although it's awkward and can be a pain in the arse, at least it was for me
  • A wide range of games available, substantially more than PS3, mainly due to it being on the market for much longer. There are only a few titiles which are XBox360 only though and most are available on both platforms these days.
  • Playing on-line costs money. You have to buy a subscription to XBox Live which can cost upto $120 a year.
  • No built in web browser
  • Excellent on-line presence with the XBox Live. It's very easy to find/join online games with your friends
  • Several chips available to allow you to play backed up/copied gameson the XBox360.
  • Seems to look the same on any old crap TV like the one we have upstairs. Didn't make good use of the Sony Bravia 1080p HDTV in the front room
  • The 360 has a wire Ethernet port only. You have to buy an additional Wireless USB "dongle" (see below) to get make it wireless at an additional cost of ~$120
  • There are various versions of the XBox 360 and the cheapest does not include a Hard Disk, but one can easily be purchased from HK for $50 via eBay
Wii

  • Very easy to navigate, but quite a childish user interface with next to useless "channels" for news, weather, etc
  • Not an entertainment system, can't play back MP3's, DVDss or DivX files let alone Blu-Ray
  • Poor graphics with a maximum resolution of 576i (not HD) light years behind those on the PS3 and XBox360, but that's not the point of the system
  • The games and the unique WiiMote controllers are the key with this system. The ability to control the game play by moving your arms, hands, and with the recent Balance Board from WiiFit, your entire body leads to some amazingly clever and addictive games.
  • The console is mainly aimed at the younger children and the "family" playing together market.
  • Most major cross-platform games are released for the Wii although most have adjustments to compensate for its lack of graphical power.
  • Playing on-line is free
  • Has an add-on web browser for internet access through TV
  • Built-in 802.11b/g WiFi out of the box, Ethernet adapter available at a cost
  • The BBC recently announced that they will be releasing a BBC iPlayer channel on the Wii but only in the UK, apart from that no TV support.

Interesting comparisons Al.

I must admit I am generaly happy with the 360.I really dont need a console to do anything more than its main use, playing games. What I do hate about consoles is the absolute kick the arse out of it prices they charge for add ons I.E $120 for a wireless adapter.I know some people get round the wireless thing by hard wiring their 360 to their wirless laptop, and thefore obtaining a wireless (well, sort of) connection that way.I see nothings changed in that respect,Ive not done consoles since the PSone and N64,and the add ons for those were way over priced.

Just a bit on the Wii.I got one not that long after they came out,as I have always loved nintendo's in house games, and like alot of others I was curious about the unique controls. We played Wii Sports solidly for a couple of months, and occasionly to this day.I feel that while the control system has been revolutionary, and sold buckets of Wii's on that strength, its actualy a bit limited (only 3 axis of motion I think)and its not been implemented that well in the majority of games. Most games seem to involve shaking the wiimote up and down a bit to achieve a task.Saying that,Mario Galaxy was amazing (Game of the year at gamespot.com) and a return to form for the long running series.

BigApe, I would just like to add a couple of things to your comparison.

PS3 - The wireless controllers have motion sensitivity, rumble and a built in battery.
360 - You have to buy the recharge battery pack separately.

PS3 - The HDMI/Toslink/Ethernet ports are easy to access
360 - If you want HDMI and Toslink you need to buy a separate adaptor.

PS3 - Quiet as a church mouse.
360 - Sounds like a 747 on takeoff.

PS3 - All in one box
360 - Power brick is separate

360 - Xbox live is fantastic...Parties is a great feature and pretty much everyone online is guaranteed to have a headset.
PS3 - Hardly anyone has a headset and the online functions are rudimentary at best.

Right on CS, I agree with all of those.

The noise from the 360's fan is unreal. I have had to put two mats underneath the machine just to stop the hum of the fan vibrating through the house. It's crazy. That said the PS3 fan can get noisy if there is not adequate airflow around the sides and the vents get dusted up.

PS3 On-line experience is free and it shows. Definitely less people playing FPS on-line with a PS3 but I generally fine the age of those players to be more "mature" than on the XBox360.
