I have a legit copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 which is licenced for 3 computers.

Is there any way of finding out how many licence uses I have left. I currently have it on my desktop and laptop, but can't remember if I installed on some other peoples machines before I left the UK.

Cheers

Funny you should bring up licences boss ,as I was going to post something on this myself. If you dont mind I'll add a quick question myself.

I bought vista in the states on our trip over from the UK for my base unit, which was running xp with a dodgy key.I'm now considering ripping the base unit apart and sticking it on ebay,as I'm thinking about replacing it with a Lappie.

Can I sell my vista software on,considering its registered in my name ?

To ease your mind, there is not "count". This is a legal issue, not a technical one. You may only install the software on three machines in the same household. So if you have already given it to someone else's computer then you're already in breach of the license

The following is taken from the MS Office Home & Student 2007 EULA
Quote:

14. REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE. You may reassign the license to a
different device any number of times, but not more than one time every 90
days (basically this means transfer from computer to computer). If you
reassign, that other device becomes the "licensed device." If you retire
the licensed device due to hardware failure, you may reassign the license
sooner. (This section really doesn't apply to a sale.)

15. TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY. The first user of the software may make a
one-time transfer of the software, and this agreement, directly to a third
party. The first user (you) must uninstall the software before transferring
it separately from the device. The first user may not retain any copies
(disks or paperwork). Before any permitted transfer, the other party must
agree that this agreement applies to the transfer and use of the software.
The transfer must include the proof of license (the Certificate of Authority
which has the key for the software).

Feel free to install it again, but the license states that you must uninstall a previous instance if you already have three installed.

I'm not sure MS will care about that. The EULA states that you have the right to transfer the Vista software license once and once only. If the copy you have is an OEM License for Vista (i.e. came preinstalled with a DELL) then you have no right to transfer unless you sell the OEM license along with the hardware it was bought with.

So if I understand correctly I can't (legally) let my brother install the software under my key.

Thanks for that Al.As Ive said I bought it in the states off the shelf,so I should be able to move it on Ebay and the new owner should be able to register it in their name ?

Idealy I would be able to buy a new lappy without an O/S on it and install my own copy, but I doubt you can do that.

No, must be three installations in the same household.

Yes, you will be fine providing you have uninstalled your copy

Perfectly acceptable, but the problem would be finding a machine without an OS on it. You could consider buying a Dell with Linux installed and then replacing that with your copy of Windows but in truth they practically give away these OEM Licenses so your not gaining much.

Or you could just get a lappy and stick Ubuntu linux on it. http://www.ubuntu.com/
There are a multitude of free linux applications on the repositories for easy install.

The only major issue I have with openoffice is that I can't import MS Access databases. Everything else works great with practically no adjustments to the default install of Ubuntu (on HP nc4010 laptop)

Definately worth consideration if you're bothered about the validity of your MS licences :P

i think if you bought a UK student copy you should remove it anyway as you are no longer a UK student !
My wife worked in the NHS and we had office 07 from their scheme (£17 delivered). The licence is only valid while still working for them.

I had a few hard disk problems and had to reinstall and reactivate online a few times (3 or 6 times - not sure). Eventually had to ring as I could not reactivate online and the guy told me I had to go back to the seller for a new key. Of course there was no way to do this.

Since then never bought MS. I only 'lost' £17, but could equaly have had a lot of hassle if it was a full price version.

The Activation is only valid for a few installs before you have to request a new key, after explaining why, this is to stop people handing the disks about to their mates and having them all install your copy. Nothing unreasonable in my view.

The full license for MS Office isn't regional, so it shouldn't make a difference if you moved countries.
