Hello all, my name is Mark. My girlfriend and I arrived in Melbourne last week on Permanent residency visas after two years planning. So first things first we are very excited to be here and can’t wait to get our new lives cracking on! Before arriving I was well aware of the financial situation taking hold of the world including Australia, since arriving I’ve found my particular job to be in very small demand. I work in the construction industry as a Design Coordinator, due to the economic down turn most projects are on hold or main contractors have frozen any staff recruitment. Since I’ve arrived I’ve registered with two agencies, Hayes and Hill McGlynn (both of which in a round about way told me not to hold my breath). As a previous Architectural technician I may have to resort going back to the CAD station. Looking at the situation and searching on numerous job sites hasn’t really filled me with any confidence. I’m probably going down the correct and only routes but Id hate to think that I’ve missed / not thought of something. Can anyone (possibly working in the industry) offer any advice? Cheers guys! Mark |

Hi I work for an engineering company in the city and we have just had our first round of redundancies, this has been an international decision though and from what I've heard there is not a lot of hiring being done. There is still some though, so try to keep hopeful as it took us a while to get jobs initially over a year ago. I was recruited from an agency who deal with Administration & Office Support, Construction & Design, Engineering, Trades & Services called Armstrong Personnel in Malvern, phone number is 03 9882 7988. I havent been in touch with them in about 6 months but they were friendly and helpful at the time so maybe give them a call. Good Luck - Vicky |

A phenomenon

My best friends husband is a civil engineer and they now live in Brisbane and he works for a large construction company and they have been told that they have work because they are working on the port but other work there is not much around. He worked in construction here in Melbourne prior to moving to QLD and all the jobs he has worked at have been through connections in the industry. I can see that this makes it a lot harder for new people but if you know where they drink on a Friday afternoon not a bad idea to hang around having a beer you never know who you will meet. I am sure someone knows where the action is. |
