Just wondering if anyone has any fresh ideas (or good connections ;0) for boilermaker/welder/railway fitter, maintainance of rolling stock, we are not too worried about area but would like to stay Northish rather than South of the city.

My hubby is driving me crazy, after THE most stressful few weeks (make that months, since we got here!!) I could do with some stability and calm.

so ............

he really needs to find full time permanent employment before I run away screaming.

any help very much appreciated

Hello Karen.

Only place I know that may be useful to Hubby is the United Group depot at Epping, that's a rolling stock yard.

Can you indicate the suburb, might be able to offer suggestions elsewhere :yeap:

Karen,

Other places that may be interested are EDi at North Melbourne (maintenance), Bombardier at Dandenong (manufacturer/refurbisher) (also do maintenance at North Melbourne), United Group at Ballarat (overhaul/refurbishment) and as Maintrain at Westall (maintenance).

EDi and United Group also have other maintenance sites at Dynon and Spotswood respectively.

There is a maintenance site out at Preston, but I cannot remember who operates from there.

Alstom also have a presence in the state (it will get bigger now that the order for 20 additional train has been confirmed) however I think they are out in Ballarat also.

On the face of it, there should be plenty of around, especially now that the Victorian Transport Plan has been announced but it's just a case of getting your foot in the door.

There are also the tram maintainers too. Siemens and Alstom. Can't remember where the depots are though.

Good luck

Al

AUSSIE INTERNET IS FUBAR
Hi Karen

Interesting post for me,as I think I was in the ame line of work as your husband back home.I worked for Alstom/Railcare in Glasgow for 16 years as a turner in their Wheelshop.

I done some digging about before leaving the UK,and managed to get in contact with the production manager in United group Ballarat, which is one of the biggest depots in Victoria.Ive got his email address, but its on my main pc at home (I'm on holiday just now).I'll PM that to you when I get home.

Just a bit of advice on job hunting.Ive struggled a bit job hunting recently, but thankfully I have work to go back to when we get back to Melbourne.Ive been looking outside of my trade,at anything blue collar in manufacturing.Welding experience comes up time and time again - if you can show that you can do it,and can turn your hand to general blue collar work, your in with a chance.

Things have definetly picked up since the new year. The run up to christmas was hellish, but since then Ive had a good bit of luck landing interviews at least, and got offered two jobs in the space of one week before we left for our holiday.

Anyway, good luck, will PM you that email address.

Thanks for the replies peeps

we are living in Strathmore at the moment, which we love, and my sister lives in Essendon so we would prefer to be above the CBD, not settled on any particular suburb yet, gone off living too far out after the bush fires.

Hubby is driving to Cheltenham at the moment in a casual job for Fridgrite, very boring apparently and the drive is a pain from where we are so I think Hastings is out unless we move that way, which would be too far from my sister which after our crappy last few months is not what I want.

Update

Steve started work today in Altona North 'bug' welding - very boring as it is watching a machine weld, but you have to be qualified to know that it is doing it right apparently. They are paying just over $30 per hour plus super and it is open ended so it will do for now.

The agency he got this with - Hays (this was after contacting them a couple of times and getting no where) are also confident that they can get him work maintaining trams, but we have heard this before, an agency have been telling him since Jan that there are loads of shift coming up maintaining trains and he is still waiting on that one!!

The moral here is - keep at it, keep calling the agencies, even those who say they have nothing for you, you may just hit them at the right time.
