Were looking into buying either a new camera or camcorder.Idealy we would like to spend around the $300 mark, but if there is something really special,or a deal going on somewhere,we might push the boat out $100 more. This sort of equipment loses me a bit when I am reading the specs. Here's what we would like,I just dont know if our budget covers it.
I have looked at camcorders too,but none of them seem to satisfy me on the stills quality. My heads buzzin on this one, help !! :tartan: Gary :tartan: |

OH just bought a Sony Cyber-shot W150 8.1 mega pixels, 5x optical zoom, 30mm wide angle lens, super steadyshot battery stamina approx 400 shots it can also be used as a video. He has taken it off on his epic motorbike trip and so far seems happy with it (well he hasn't complained yet anyway) and I know he has used it a fair bit. I think it was just under $300. Katie |

Take a look at the Fuji finepix range - very good on stills with a SLR feel and video capacity - bonus is they use AA batteries so rechargeable are good but also if you come unstuck standard duracells will keep you going. Not sure on price though. |

Hi Gary, I am looking at this at the moment also. I have always previously stuck with Sony stuff over the years and had generally been pretty happy - however we had our car broken into when we first came over 14 months ago and it got nicked. Decided to try a different brand and went for things that I thought were important at that time based upon my prior experience. Wanted something very compact with a good zoom. I ended up going for the Ricoh R7 and it hasn't suited what we use the camera for which is where I think you need to start off. The problem I was having was we used the camera more so in low light (concerts / nights out etc) environments and it just wasn't performing. Apparently the camera manufacturers are all trying to seduce us with more megapixels and are having a bit of a pissing competion with each other on this when in a lot of cases it is not the most important thing. For low light application I am heading towards to Fuji range as it appears they perform well in this area (all to do with higher ISO setting and noise (of the bad signal variety rather that the screaming kid variety) reduction at these higher settings). Outside of this the panasonic lumix range seem to feature quite well. This website is good to look at some reviews http://www.dpreview.com/ This might also be of use http://www.consumersearch.com/digital-camera-reviews but if the low light issue is important to you then just put "best low light camera" in google and have a trawl at the resposes (the Fuji's do tend to feature repeatedly). |

Laugh if you will serious camera buffs brainwashed by your brand names  but I've had 4 superb digital cameras from Aldi over the last four years. They are branded Traveler but are made by Minox of Germany who are the experts in packing a lot of punch into a small package although like everyone else they now have their cameras made in China. My latest is 10 Mp, 5 times optical and 5 times digital zoom, can do video clips (640 x 480 resolution, decent but obviously not as good as you'd get from a camcorder). They give you 2 rechargeable Li-Ion batteries, the camera takes one (one will last until you fill up a 2 Mp card - 4/500 shots, carry the spare and you can fill a 4 Mp card), soft pouch, all the leads you need for PC and TV, editing software etc. I think I paid about £100 here in UK but when in Melbourne I saw all Aldi's selling them for $169 from memory. You'll find many of these cameras and camcorders on sale at Aldi from time to time: http://h8349.serverkompetenz.net/htdocs_traveler/uk/front_content.php?idcat=51 The one I refer to is the Traveler DC-X5: http://h8349.serverkompetenz.net/htdocs_traveler/uk/front_content.php?idcat=439&lang=3&client=3 |

Hi Gary Don't think you can ever go far wrong with Canon's A series cameras - have known 2 people to have them and produce good shots. Just decide on whether you want additional things like a view finder (which are quite rare these days) plus if you want RAW files or just happy with jpgs. TBH megapixels aren't the issue - for good pictures it's the lens that counts. As Mark says take a look at Dpreview as I'm a bit out of touch with compacts at the moment. |

JB Hi Fi have got a couple of video cameras that might interest you Gary. The first camera on that link is a Samsung for $246 and the a couple below that in the list is a Canon for $327. Knowing next to nothing about video cameras I have no idea if they're any good but with their rep I'd be surprised if the Canon was crap. I'd have thought probably a little light on some features rather than loaded but useless. Not a clue about the Samsung though. Might be worth looking through the review sites for info on both? |

Gary, after losing my Sony digital camera I have recently purchased a Panasonic DMC-FS3 for well below the price state on the link. Its a great little camera. The reasons I went for this one over another Sony: It takes SD memory cards rather than the MemorySticks. SD are more readily available and cheaper A lot of the new Sony camera now have a touch screen LCD display and no buttons = fingerprints all over the back of the camera The panasonic has a Leica lens. (Ok the Sony has a Carl Zeiss lens so its splitting hairs really) I had heard nothing but good reviews about the Panasonic cameras. Now to be honest if I didn't have my DSLR I would have gone for one of these Panasonic DMC-TZ15. Again you can get them much cheaper than the website price. This is an absolutely awesome camera. |

Bought our new camera today, and decided on something a little more serious. Posted Image Fujifilm FinePix S5800fd.Liked the 10 x optical zoom, and it even has an anti wobble feature,so when your an alky like me and have the shakes from the night befores session it should adjust for that. :tartan: Gary :tartan: |

Nice one mate. I toyed with getting a Fuji myself since their dSLRs use Nikon lens mounts and I wouldn't need to buy new lenses, and in fact some Fujis have been virtually Nikons with a few buttons moved and a different sensor inside. Fuji know what they're doing, I'm sure you'll be happy with that camera. |
