Hi Guys :waving:

I have asked a similar question before and thank you again everyone who has advised me (especially Kelzo70  ). We are still looking into rentals in Mt Eliza/Mt Martha/Mornington when we arrive in September. Our first choice has always been beachside Mt Eliza and Kungyung Primary School, however, our choice of property is limited and I have just found out that Kungyung P.S only operates an after school care program and not a before school care program (something we will eventually need). I have contacted a few of the schools, which I have had good reviews on and the ones which have both before and after school care facilities that I have heard about so far are:

Osborne Primary School, Mt Martha
Bentons Junior College, Mornington
Mornington Primary School, Mornington

(still waiting to hear back from Mt Eliza P.S and Mt Martha P.S)

I believe all these schools are good, however, to those who live in these areas, which one is most recommended? I know you can read up on schools etc but you don't really know unless you are living in the area and just know by hearsy. My older daughter is currently at a very good and highly recommended public school here in the UK and I am really anxious about finding a similar one there. If you have kids, which school is be at the top of your list? ANY advice would really help and be very much appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Top of my list is Tyabb Top Primary School as both my children went there but its in the country so not really practical for Mount Martha and Mornington. Moorooduc Primary is another one but again in the country. The children in these schools mainly come of the studs and farms around the area and they are smaller schools. If you want Private Public schools, Peninsula, the new one at Mount Martha someone will pop along with the name, Woodleigh in Baxter.

I imagine the primary schools in Mornington and Mount Martha are rather large given the amount of new housing in the areas.

You may care to consider South Frankston,Derinya is a good primary school and also if you live in South Frankston you are in the zone for Frankston high school.

The new one in Mt Martha is Balcombe Grammar.
I can recommend The Peninsula School if you are near Mt Eliza - they offer both before and after school care.

We have two kids at Osborne Primary and can't fault it. They run before and after school care, which by all accounts, is really good (and popular). The Osborne have submitted plans for an entire new school, to be built on the same grounds, under the Governments education package - should hear in July/August.
Don't hesitate to PM if you want anymore info.

Cheers.

I have just had an email and found out that Mount Martha P.S also have both before and after school care facilities so add that to the list. They all look and sound like great schools, but which would is mostly recommended? I am going to visit when I arrive but would be great to hear local people's views.

Thanks!

I can only comment on Benton Junior College as our boys ( 11 & 9 ) have been there for almost a year now and we have had no concerns over their academic progress or fitting in with classmates etc. We have used the pre and post school care club, which is also very good in our experience and the teachers last year and this year to date have been available for questions as and when required. They have a few day trips away from the school during the year and at the tail end of year six they have a trip to Canberra for a week as part of their learning program about how the country is governed etc. ( which is a hell of a lot more than I ever got at school  )

Hi :waving:
I have just started teaching aerobics/fitness at Balcome grammar, I must say I am very impressed with the school so far. :yeap: The PE teacher is an expat and I have just discovered he lived 5 mins from my home in the UK & now lives 5 mins from my home here  I have been quizzing him on the school & may consider sending my daughter there in a few years time. This is a private school, (but not to expensive) I think it is becoming increasingly popular because the only choice for NON private secondary schools in the area are Mornington & Mt Eliza (my two boys 15 & 18 go to Mt Eliza) which in my opinion, and the opinions of my friends in the education industry agree is the better of the two. They are doing great, but I am not sure if that is because they came from very good grammar schools in the UK. (we have only been here a year!) If you are gonna go the private root I have heard that the Peninsular school is good, but I have no first hand experience!

Thanks, Kerrie. No, we are definately not going down the private route, not when I feel the state schools are good enough. I think we have ruled out Mt Eliza schools because they do not offer before school care facilities, so I think we are swaying towards either Mount Martha P.S, Osbourne P.S and Bentons Junior College - will visit them when we arrive though to see what one feels best. Is there a bit of an issue with secondary schools there? Everyone seems to think most primary schools fine but a lot of the secondary schools aren't great - this worries me a lot, so any help with that would be great.

Thanks again everyone!

In my opinion the State Education System is very good and most secondary colleges are excellent. Unfortunately these school cannot be selective with who attends and often there can be some years that are very disruptive and for this reason I chose to send my children to private secondary college.

State schools often offer a lot more diverse subjects than private education as private education tends to be an academic education. For this reason this precludes people from some courses at further education as they do not have the course work.

Research has shown that children from the State system are less likely to drop out in the first year of university and this is thought to be because the private system tends to spoon feed students and because they want to attract new students they make sure the students pass etc. Often this is not good for the student as their ability may not match their marks. Us parents who look at school lists make this sort of thing happen.

I have posted this before but do not forget that you can take your children out of high school and send them to TAFE (Technical and Further Education) to complete their VCE and this is very good for those children who find school difficult socially or cannot get on with the teachers like my friend's daughter   . TAFE has a VCE programme and the teachers at TAFE are very good.

OK, we have changed our minds again :mah: We really just love Mount Eliza so feel that we should go with our hearts on that one. Mt Eliza North P.S said they were hoping to get a before school care club in the very near future, failing that we will need to get a registered childminder for the morning......does anyone know any links to registered childminders in the Mt Eliza area?

Thanks,
J

If you have a look at the Mornington Peninsula Shire site they have the different child care options on there. In fact the site has a lot of things that help new arrivals to the area.
