I really have my begging bowl out today :pmsl: but does anyone have a table of secondary schools in Melbourne detailing stats for attainment etc? Someone once emailed me this but again due to my laptop crashing this was lost. If anyone has this or knows a link to get these details please let me know - I would really appreciate this. I am just freaking out a bit about the secondary schools there - heard so much with regards to some being really rough and it's hard to get a good one! What are the state secondary schools like in the Morning Peninsula? I heard that Frankston South is the best down there but is this true? What's Mt Eliza Secondary like? Thanks guys  |

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/schoolstats/postcompcompletiondata-2008schools.pdf The Victorian Education Department only releases the statistics by school in alphabetical order, not believing in 'league tables' because invariably they just reflect socio-economic background of pupils! MacRobertson Girls High School isn't necessarily the 'best' school but it consistently gets the best results. |

To enrol in Frankston High School you have to live in the zone so if you wanted your children to attend this school you know where you will live. All schools have high achieving students but private schools give scholarships and attract them. I think if a child is happy and contented and working well at a school the child will do well. My son teacher rolls his eyes at all these statistics and says depends what I am sent each year  My criteria for picking a high school was lack of bullying, a certain amount of discipline and this then made my children happy. Hence I sent them to Flinders College in Tyabb however there still was some bullying going on and this can be psychological these days rather than physical. Psychological bullying is worse in my view as staff at the school do not have any idea that it is going on. Do not worry once you have your children in a school, and if you do not like it, they do not like it, you can move them. I believe you just have to wait and see. You find out all about high schools from other Mums at the primary school and from living in the area. Also children tell us where they would like to go depending on what subjects they want in high school. Remember they are getting older when they go to high school and have formed opinions themselves. |

My teen is half way through vce at Brentwood, the pressure is really mounting , i cant wait for it too finish, One (of the many things) we didnt realise about vce, is that they can take classes outside of school that will count towards thier enter score :realmad: , for example many of her friends parents are immigrants, polish, swedish , japanese, chinese, lol, you name it, so they do their homecountry language towards vce, easy for them as they have grown up with it, she was good at french in scotland (credit in her standard grade), if we had known she could have continued this language outside school and helped her with her enter (Brentwood offer Japanese and German), with hindsight i realise the principle of the school gave us zilch info about vice, this would've eased some of the pressure for her, she is working her butt off to get a half decent enter score will have to get high marks in all her subjects, and the pressure is telling. As has been said about frankston school, you have to be in the zone for many of the state schools, if your in a position to afford private education, then you will have alot more freedom of choice, bloody education system in this country pisses me right off, as does the health system, poor patient last week in agony on the theatre table, phone call , patient not covered by private health insurance, drs told patiend they could not operate, poor guy , practically crying in pain now, had to get off the theatre table, i mean wtf!!! sorry rant over, |

So medicare doesn't cover everything? We are planning to go private once we both have jobs and settled but thought medicare was similar to the NHS in the UK? Is it true you also pay when you go to see the Doctor each time ($50 or thereabouts?) Is this the case whether you are private or on medicare? J |

I emailed Mt Eliza Secondary College - they don't have a boundary zone but obviously do give preference to those living in the neighbourhood when places become tight. It's still a few years off for us but I am pretty worried about getting the school right. Don't think we could really afford to finance 2 (maybe 3) private school fees so ruling out private at the moment. What would you say the best state secondary school would be in the Morning Peninsula area? J |

jills, some doctors "bulk bill" and often have a sign outside saying so. This means it's kind of like the UK in that it doesn't cost anything for the appointment, though they'll still ask for your Medicare card so they can swipe it for their costs (I assume that's what it's for anyway). Other doctors charge you varying amounts, though $50-60 sounds about right. If you go to a doctor that charges you're supposed to keep the receipt so you can claim back part of the costs. You do that by taking the receipts and your Medicare card in to a Centrelink and they just hand over the cash. It comes to about $33 per $50 that you've been charged by the clinic, or at least that's about how much I got back when I did it. Personally I find the local bulk billing place a pain in the neck. The doctors are excellent but because it's free and done on a walk in, no appointment basis it can get bloody busy. After a 2 hour wait one time I decided I'd rather spend $50 - actually $17 net - somewhere that does appointments so I can see a doctor within 15 minutes or so of arriving. |

Not sure on the age of your kids, but from what teachers here have told me, the schools can change a bit. The deputy principle from Frankston South (who in no small part was responsible for the school's sucess - and it is a great school by all accounts), is now the principle at Mornington Secondary (I think it's Mornington anyway). The chances are that her knowledge, coupled with Mr Rudds billions he's chucking into education, will bring Mornington up very quickly. Padua is pretty good, and you dont have to be Catholic to get in (but it helps), and Flinders has a good rep too. You do have to pay for these, Frankston included. Personally my opinions have changed slightly on private education as six months ago I said I'd never do it. Now, working where I do, I realise the opportunities the kids have if you can afford it. If we could, then my two would go. That said, it wont guarantee your child will become a genius. There are girls here that think they can just turn up and they'll be right. I'd second the bulk billing thing. It's worth the 13 bucks to get an appointment. |
