Hi All We are arriving in Melbourne on 24th July..... can't wait! We are both keen skiers and would like to suss out the Melbourne ski scene whilst the cat is in quarantine...... so within the 1st 3-4 weeks I understand that August is peak season and if it is anything like European resorts, acommodation will be booking up fast! Anyone got any recommendations for good value accomodation - there is just the 2 of us so a 1 bedroom self catering apartment or hotel would suffice Thanks in advance Sue and Richard |

There are a lot of Ski Lodges on Bulla, Hotham and Falls Creek, Dinner Plane. A lot of people stay in the towns like Bright, Falls Creek and Buffalo but Buffalo is probably more sight seeing and beginners. Falls Creek has lot of cross country trails. Mount Beauty is closer to Hotham and has a lot of accommodation. Staying at the actual resort will be dearer but really depends on the snow and also guess economy might be cheaper this year. We never go in the winter as not keen on the white stuff, we visit these areas in spring, summer and autumn. Have a look in the weekend papers travel section and there will be a lot of adverts for the winter season. |

We have just managed to pick up a long weekend at Mt Buller in August, staying in a lodge with friends. It isn't cheap as it is over the school holidays. Costs were about $90 per person per night, but it looked like apartments were more expensive and hotels were ridiculous in my opinion. I'm not a snow person and I hate the cold, so it all sounds expensive to me. Accommodation is booking up fast, so you will need to be quick to get something decent. Gill |

If hard to get accommodation you can drive from Albury Wodonga not that far and also Wangaratta, my son drives over from Yarrawonga. Myrtleford, Beechworth, Yackandandah all in the area. |

Anybody spent time at Dinner Plain? How far from there to Mt Hotham? My understanding is that Dinner Plain will suit my wife and kids for beginners and tobaggoning where as Hotham will have some more challenging slopes for myself? Has any one looked at Omeo which is 30 mins from Dinner Plain? A colleague just came back from a long weekend away and said there was tons of cheap and high quality accomodation that side. Prices for a week were equivalent to a day in Hotham. |

We went upto Mt Buller last July. we stayed in a lovely little place just outside Merrijig (the last village before the mountain) Buttercup cottage Merrijig It is (as you can see on the website) a lovely place with a homely log cabin feel. there is a log burner fire as well as reverse cycle air con, so the place is nice and toasty warm. there is a spa bath and the owners lay on a complimentary plate of home cooked scones and cakes. We also got a few free bottles of their lovely wine because I think the landlady fancied me. It was about a half hour drive up the mountain from there and you just paid the daily parking rate instead of paying the premium of staying up on the mountain. I couldn't recommend it enough. give it a go. |

We stayed in Dinner Plain last season, and personally we preferred it to Hotham. Hotham is very open, and can get very cold and windy, and because Dinner plain is lower, it doesnt suffer as badly (but it can get very cold !) have you seen these sites : http://www.dinnerplain.com/index.php?pi=2&cookID=b http://www.accommdinnerplain.com.au/ We stayed here last year, and it was excellent, but not particularly cheap : http://www.rundells.com.au/ I would personally find Omeo a bit too far to travel every day back and forth to Hotham, but we have 2 kids as well, so they want to be on the snow ASAP. Hotham has plenty of slopes suitable for beginners. Dinner plain is a bit too basic IMO for beginners. Dont imagine too many challenging slopes in Australia, but you can have plenty of fun. |
