Hello Everyone,

We are moving from Adelaide to Victoria with a new position; we have been in Adelaide for three years so we are looking forward to our move.

We are thinking of moving to Sassafras or the surounding areas-this would require a 120min drive to work which is ok.

I was hoping anyone knowing the area or living in this area would have an insight in to what to expect, we have three children at the ages of 13, 11 and 6 so if anybody's children attend the schools could you please point us in the right direction for good ones.

Thanks in advance.

Kath.

Sassafras is a small village but its lovely. We live at the bottom of the Dandenongs maybe 15 mins drive away.

Its always a few degrees cooler up there.

Loads of tourists up there in Summer but a bit quieter in Winter.

If you get a place in Sassafras I'm sure you will love it.

Hi Kath.

Probably the best schools (all private) in the area are the all boys school of St Josephs in Ferntree gully, all girls in Belgrave, Mather Christie or Mount Lilydale in Lilydale (mixed) You would need to work hard to get the kids into any of these schools, but definitely worth it. They all cost about 4 1/2 - 5k per year plus books/excursions etc. For your youngest, I dont know much about primary schools around Sassafras, my youngest goes to St Pauls in Monbulk, which is a "bigger" school in the hills with nearly 200 students. The smaller schools have only about 60-80 students in the whole school.

got to go to work now, but will post up a bit more later.

Paul.

One thing to bear in mind with the Dandenongs, and especially places higher up like Sassafras, it can get very cold & wet in the winter months. We have had over 60mm of rain in the last 48 hours, and temperatures can get to freezing and just below at night in the middle of winter. You might even get a bit of snow.

Because there is nothing but trees everywhere, in strong winds it is quite common that the power cables get taken down and power outs are quite common (although the last year has been much better) We had 18 power outs in our first year in the hills, and one lasted just over 48 hours, and without heating it was bloody freezing !!

All that aside, we love the community spirit in the villages here, and you get to know people very quickly. The kids will have plenty of clubs & sports in the area, but you will become a taxi at night for basketball, footy, scouts, dancing lessons, horse riding etc etc.

There is a pool in Monbulk & outdoor pools in Olinda & Belgrave. Not sure of others in the area. I dont know if Sassafras has a decent supermarket, but Monbulk has a reasonable sized Safeway & there are rumours that they are building an Aldi here in about a years time as well. They have bought the land, but are awaiting the permits.

Ferntree Gully/Knox is 15/20 minutes away for loads more shopping possibilities, & in the other direction you have Lilydale/Chirnside park and then the Canterbury road which has Bunnings/spotlight/good guys & dozens of furniture & carpet stores etc.

We have a small rental under our house, and we recently had an English couple who had emigrated from Kenya, and they fell in love with the area, and have just put in an offer down the road from us. He will be commuting to Lilydale each day. We send a truck into Richmond every day from Monbulk, and it normally takes 45-60 minutes, so I dont think youneed worry about 120 minutes drive each way.

If you would like more info on the the area, feel free to send me a PM or email with your number and i'll give you a call.

Paul.

Thanks very much for the info; we live in the hills of Adelaide and we can have the same kind of weather system that you get (minus the snow) high winds, torrential rain etc.

I think the deal is sealed and the Dandenongs is where we will relocate to.

Many thanks.
