A phenomenon
My NEC lcd tv has developed a problem and I wondered if I have to throw it away or can it be fixed.

When I switch it on it flashes and then goes black, can go through the channels and they just give a short flash of screen and then go black.

Sound is fine.

I do not want to throw good money after bad and get the people out here to find out I need to tip it

I would try having a go at changing the leads before you throw it away, might be just a short or a dry joint in the video cable , or a loose connecton in the TV itself

Thanks for the suggestion, I think its a gonner, checked all the cables, the colour has been a bit peculiar at times for a while now. They were not made to last like the old style tele seems awful that we have to throw away all this stuff because its too expensive to fix.

We have a couple of old teles which we keep around the house for times such as this and they keep on working.

Have you tried looking for telly repair people? A few years ago we thought our telly had had it but found a guy who knew exactly what to do for fifty quid or so. I might be wrong but I get the impression there are more of those guys about here than back in the UK. But even if you do find someone I imagine it depends a lot on what exactly the fault is.

check your household insurance policy, then pour cola into the vents on the back (with it switched on for better effect.)

A friend got a phone-call from his wife whilst we were in the pub. She informed him that a candle on the tv toppled over and ... She said she was OK as a neighbour (very fit policeman) got the tv outside. Needless to say my friend saw no reason to remove himself from his night of enjoyment and stayed drinking with us much to the chagrin of his wife

Anyway, the tv fire caused some nasty toxins and the lounge and hall had to be totally re-decorated as well as a new tv.

Make sure the kids are outside and that you are wearing a mask!

old CRT tv's used to be ideal for putting glasses on top, but you would need to be stupid to try to balance a glass on a LCD tv which is very small and in most cases uneven.

insurance company might think it a bit dodgy.

just a thought.

I've had my first LCD for about 7 years now, and its still as good as the day I bought it. The good brands do generally last well, but they are not cheap. I'm still in shock from my first one, a 19" Samsung which I paid the equivalent of $3250 for.

I bought a new 40" Samsung yesterday & got a 22" free !! (and paid less)

cmon, you know you really want a new monster TV in the lounge

Due to our different tastes we all have our own teles in this house  I bought a sharp today with three year warranty took extra two years for good measure. I only wanted a 32 inch as it was to replace the one I watch. The one that bust was an NEC. Bought it at Clive Peters I like them, usually go around the world and return there. Because I have bought quite a bit over the years there they gave me a bigger discount which was good.

sounds like the light source has failed - the screens are illuminated by a high intensity fluorescent lamp(s) (or something) - not cheap to replace but possibly available as a spare from NEC direct - give it a try. Otherwise try a repair shop. Depends on how much you paid for it - expensive and recent then maybe worth it, cheap and old not worth it.
