Its cold, wet and windy therfore I must have Turkey and all the trimmings. Yesterday I put up fairy lights!!!!! How come its not Christmas, this is a strange land that we live in!!!! been here nearly four years and still not used to it. So...... does anyone know of a good place doing Christmas in July lunches/dinners? oh on the penninsula or even on the way up to and including the City. On my wish list would be - an open fire, good food of course, and some christmas decorations, just a few I'm not greedy. Cheers and Merry Christmas |

The Cookoo in Olinda springs to mind. The Cookoo Website Christmas runs 'till 31st July and to quote from the events guide "Delightfully decorated the Cuckoo is the perfect place to anticipate a white Christmas in the hills as you enjoy Christmas fare, carols and a visit from our singing Santa. With plenty to eat and plenty to celebrate this is a very popular time of year at the Cuckoo so book early." John |

Pig and Whistle in Olinda gets my vote. Nice open fireplace, beer and Christmas cheer. I think Ive just found out where we're going this Sunday! Edit; Just looked at their menu and they don't have roast Turkey??? They have roast chicken, lamb or a risotto but no turkey. Steve is unhappy with the Pig and Whistle Christmas Menu...sad face. |

A phenomenon

Christmas in July is very popular now and a lot of pubs, restaurants are having the celebration now. Usually advertised in local papers, Sun or Age "what is on section". Quite a few places do it on the Peninsula. We have not been but seen the ads each year when the time comes around. |

would not recommend the xmas meal in the pig, the food was not worth the $35 at all, there were some strange combinations with rather sweet chicken and veg to hot plum pudding with cold brandy custard!! pretty piss poor really shame really as its a lovely pub for a drink. have heard the kelly which is just over the way from there might be doing xmas and its quite nice there. |

Yes it was disappointing, but an improvement on their xmas dinner last year. I do wonder how they come up with their traditional Christmas Menu and perhaps should be watching Masterchef to understand not mixing seasons. Caesar salad and then roast followed by lemon meringue pie is not Christmas. I honestly fail to see how their xmas menu with pumpkin soup and risotto was any different to any other day. As you say pretty poor. It is not difficult to ask around and find out what a traditional winter Christmas dinner should be and this isn't suppose to be an Australian Christmas dinner, so drop the bloody pumpkin in everything. No pigs in blankets were seen and I'm not sure if that weird lump of stuff was supposed to be stuffing or a bread sauce dumpling. We did however have a lovely time with our friends, which is what a Christmas get together is all about. |

I think you've got your message across and I'm sure the owners of the Pig & Whilstle (who posted on another thread recently) will be happy to take your comments on board. Just to add a bit of balance to this we were also there and were pretty impressed with the food, especially when you consider that they were catering for a party of 53! In fact if I hadn't seen you both there I would have assumed that you were talking about a different Pig & Whistle. Ok so the combinations were a bit unusual but independently each course was fine. I also had the chicken as a main and the portion size was plenty and it was piping hot which I was really surprised about being that they were serving so many at once. Perhaps you two just got an unlucky serving. With regards to the absence of pigs in blankets, this event is advertised as christmas in July not an 'English' christmas in July so I guess they can serve up what ever they like. All that aside I hope Lor had a great time as it was her birthday and let's not forget that she organised it for us all so thanks Lor and happy birthday. Pam |

I would have to agree about the food, I was very disappointed with my meal. The chicken and vegetables tasted too sweet, and the plum pudding was cold with luke warm custard which had a film on it as if it was slightly old. I did have a good afternoon despite the jetlag, catching up with people :) |

although it is advertised as a traditional English pub, so people could assume the Christmas meal would also be tradtional Engligh. |
