Hi everyone Hope someone can steer me right, I am an Australian living in London and wanting to come back to live shortly to Australia. I have been away a very long time and want to know if someone can give the me the contact to get a work number (not sure what it's called there -here it's called a 'national insurance number')....I would have had a number at somepoint in my past but that was pre-computer age. Also I think I'm supposed to have a Medicard number to get work there....is there a contact that someone can give to apply for one. Anything else that I am missing I would appreciate the advice. many thanks: Daryl |

Hi Daryl Do you mean a tax-file number? That's the only thing we had to apply for on arrival. You can now do it online when you arrive but there seems to be quite a long wait to get it at the moment. It might be best if you call the ATO on arrival as presumably you must be on their records somewhere! Again with Medicare you'll need to call into an office and ask them as I know there is some rule about returning Aussies to do with how long you've been away. Think that was all we had to do! However, I seem to remember you are going into a job so the HR dept will also advise on what you need to register for. The only drag with the wait for the tax file number is that you'll be on emergency tax for a while. Good luck KK |

You may also be shocked at the price of everything now if you have been away a long time, my wife was away for just 4 years and the rental and house and food prices skyrocketed in that period |
