Our first huntsman. Well, first decent sized one anyway when you don't count a few real tiddlers. This fella was over the road at the in-laws about 3 inches across so still not a biggie, but much larger than any spids I've ever seen in Britain outside of a zoo.

The weird thing is that I'm far from the biggest fan of spiders usually and I'd likely have taken a step back if he'd been a tenth that size, but that size my reaction was more like 'oh wow, look at the size of that thing'.

Not sure if this is a myth but we had our first huntsman last year. Someone at work said that if you find one then there is usually another not far behind. Sure enough two nights later just before bedtime there in the bathroom was a very ugly looking huntsman looking for its buddy whilst watching me brush my teeth. Needless to say that once I regained my normal heatbeat back our zero telerance policy to anything inside the house meant he joined his mate quicker than he probably expected.

They really are ugly and scary spiders but fortunatley not seen another since. Also I know they are harmless and supposedly good to have around the house before anyone reminds me.

Over the past 48hrs I have been summoned twice to rescue a damsel in distress (the wife) from the prospect of two mediocre but equally scary spiders crawling freely within the confines of her palace. Its funny how its the only time I'm truly appreciated

:yeap: Someone told us that they eat redbacks and whitetails so they're good to have around providing just the sight of one doesn't make send you screaming for the airport  but I also seem to recall seeing somewhere that 'not dangerous' isn't quite the same as harmless. I think it said that bites are like bee/wasp stings, which most of us can live with unless you're allergic. On that basis I wouldn't want to pick one up and give it a cuddle.

Unlike a bee they don't deploy the fangs that often. You can have them run over your hands to scare lots of people quite happily. (As I used to do as a kid, not quite sure if I could still do it though.)

*shivers* 1st bad experience was when a huntsman fell off the bathroom ceiling stright onto my hand as I was reaching for the lightswitch (it wasn't dark, but I wanted more light so I could keep an eye on the bugger). Result = me screaming like a girl.

2ns bad experience was when my tabby came in from the garden and I stroked it's back...to find a huntsman sitting on it's back. Result = me screaming like a girl.

I've never been afraid of spiders until we came here! If I know it's harmless then that's fine but I do freak when I see a whitetail.

Huntsmen are good spiders as are the long legged ones as they eat the nasty ones.

Earwigs are the flavour of the month again in our house - must be something to do with the house as we never got many in the other one - that was a whitetail house! I went to lie on the sofa the other night and something caught my eye and there's a flippin earwing on the sofa!

I'm a bit paranoid about bees and wasps now as in the last few years I've been stung by both and had a mild reaction. They say it's your 2nd or 3rd stings which might result in a proper allegery attack so I don't want to take the change. The bee sting was the worst as my arm went numb for a while and was a bit funny for 24 hours. The wasp sting was okay at the time but 4 days later it came out in a rash.

So not taking any chances with Whitetails!

We also seem to be over run with earwigs at the moment and a couple of white tails over the last few days! And ants seem to be everywhere, outside, mainly!
May need to invest in some sort of bug eating thing?

hevs, owww. Three bites? Sounds like the little sods have got it in for you. Actually seems like there are more whitetails about recently. First summer here I don't think we saw a single one in the house and in the last month we've killed two of 'em.
