Hi, For those that shipped a car in the container with your possesions, what did you do regarding insurance. Last time  we used Letton for household contents, but didn't ship a car. Any comments appreciated. Plus, anyone got any recent quotes on 40ft containers, as our current price seems a bit steep. Pete |

Hi Pete. We had Letton Percival do the car as well. From what I recall it was lower than everything else. Back on my old car import thread I said it was about 1.5% of value, and I'm pretty sure the contents were nearer 2%. Can't help with recent container pricing but what I'd suggest is to ask for a quote for a 40' with the car in it, a quote for two 20's so the car and household stuff go separately, and finally just a quote for a single 20' for household only as if you were putting the car on a ro-ro instead if you think they're playing musical quotes to try to steer you towards what suits them. We found that the 40' was certainly the cheaper option, approx. £1200 more than a single 20' for house contents only. Can't recall exactly what the 20' quotes were but I've got a feeling it worked out that a 40' was about 65-75% of the cost of two 20's. On the subject of ro-ros, do consider it as alternative to containerised car shipping. I know bigAPE had some damage to his car which was what put us off a ro-ro, but mine was wheeled off with some expensive to repair corrosion on the anti-roll bar and rear callipers. There was probably a bit there already but I'm convinced the salt air accelerated it and in retrospect I think it might have had less exposure below decks on a ro-ro. Certainly couldn't have been worse than a container exposed to the elements. |

Out of interest, can you only insure your stuff from an insurer in the country you're moving from i.e. Aus to UK, can you use Lettons or do you have to use an Aussie insurer? |
