Advice appreciated, I asked this before and have lost the piece of paper I wrote your kind responses down on! Question: If someone had a UK mobile and an Oz mobile and was in Australia, how would someone in the UK text them? I think to text a UK mobile from UK - number is 00-61-7xxxxetc; to the Oz mobile from UK is 00-61-4xxxetc Will this cost more than texting someone in the UK (or perhaps its less expensive to UK mobile than Oz mobile)? I think to text a UK mobile from a UK or Oz mobile in Oz - number is 00-11-44-7xxxetc; Again, relative costs using either mobile to text UK? Someone will probably say use + instead of 00 but will either do? Any contributions gratefully received. |

I think you're right that all will work but using the + is simpler IMO. I don't know the ins and outs but it seems to act as an instruction to do whatever is needed to route the call/text correctly to the country code that follows. Any UK number stored in your phone's memory as +44 will work normally from Australia to Zanzibar, and that includes in the UK so you might as well store UK mobiles as +44 in the first place. Might be an O2 thing but incoming texts used to use the + sign on my UK mobile anyway. Haven't had enough texts here to notice if the same thing happens. Costs will surely depend on tariffs though I expect texting either mobile from the UK will be much cheaper than using either to to text back. You'll probably need to check with the service provider. Text rates in Oz take the piss and I expect for the UK phone it'll be much pricier than normal since it's going to be hosted by Aussie network while it's here (our O2 phones use Optus). Bear in mind also that the UK mobile in Oz may be charged to receive the text as well. Again, something to check with O2 or whoever in the UK. If international roaming isn't part of your plan you'll need to contact them anyway to get that switched on. IIRC our first mobiles were basically UK only and we had to ask Cellnet as they were back then to turn on roaming for a holiday in Ireland, though if it's a phone already used abroad then obviously roaming is on already. |

Simon, I'm with you with the use of +CountryCode as the +accesses the international dialing code which ever country you're in. So the + in the uk = 00 while in Oz it's 0011 etc. I have most of my numbers set like this John Edited by Nod, 19 Nov 2009, 06:21 AM.

I use Fishtext, costs me 2p to text the UK and I pay £10 a year for a UK phone number so people in the UK can text me for the cost of local text to them, you need a phone plan with a bit of data and a fairly recent phone to be able to use the application on your phone, you can also send and receive text via your computer. |

Never heard of Fishtext but it looks like another handy one for the bookmarks. One odd thing, I had a look at the pricing and it's 2p to Telstra mobiles but only 1.33 to Vodafone, Optus and Hutchison mobiles. Oh well, we're on Vodafone so I'm not going to knock it. |

I think if you are texting a UK mobile from the UK, regardless of where the recipient is, you do not need any country code information:- So Uk phone in Australia, being texted by a UK phone in the UK = 07860 etc (no country codes required) UK phone in Australia, being texted by a UK phone that is not in UK = +44 7860 etc UK phone being texted by Oz mobile in Australia = +44 7860 etc UK phone in Oz texting Oz mobile = +61 407 etc Happy to be corrected if I am wrong Pete PS Alot easier to enter all numbers with +country code, as then it never matters |

Thanks very much for all that guys, told me exactly what I need to know. Edited So Pete, Person in UK texting a UK phone in Oz texts as normal with the 07etc and the text finds the person overseas: Or do you put +44 or +61 and drop the zero then rest of number? (i.e. use UK or Oz code before number to find the person in Oz) Edited by OzTennis, 19 Nov 2009, 08:30 PM.

The beauty of the system (cell phones) is that you do not need to know where there are, just what country the phone is registered too. The system automatically knows when its abroad, because as soon as you switch on your (for example) UK mobile in Spain, the spanish telecom provider pings the system to inform your provider that it has found you. In your example, the person texting can use the 07etc, however if they store the number with a +44 (for a Uk phone), then if they travel abroad, it would also still work. Pete |
