:cross: :xmas1: :cross: :xmas1: :cross: :xmas1: :cross: :xmas1: :cross: :xmas1: As it will be our first Christmas in Melbourne, just wondering if there are any annual events that are worth going to in the run up to Christmas? (with 2 boys) We are looking forward to the fireworks at New Year - a first for us, watching fireworks not in the freezing cold :fingerscrossed: !! but wondered if there was anything else worth seeing? Happy silly season everyone - although I am finding it all a bit relaxed out here and it is strange seeing all the summer clothes next to the xmas decs in the shops....mind you I am not missing the :freezing: and all the :ill: that we usually get this time of year!! Mandy :xmas1: :xmas2: :xmas3: :cross: |

If you've got young kids, go and do the santa land stuff in the basement of Myer's and David Jones in the city. We'll be in the city for the NYE fireworks and stuff, if you fancy meeting up again. |

There should also be a "Carols by candlelight" around your area. SAnta usually puts in an appearance. Check out your local paper. |

Hi Mandy I think they do a carol service in Dendy Park for Christmas! There are also lots of parades etc in the city and if you don't want to go into the city on NYE then watching the fireworks from North Point with a picnic is really good! Kim |

Took a lot of getting used to (not quite there yet, and its been nearly five years) - the fact that christmas is very much a none event over here - just a lot of shopping!!!! Have really tried to get into the spirit, but not the same, without holly, and mulled wine and all the nice venues that did christmasy things. Just treat it as a summer holiday now - which aint all bad. Even put up our christmas tree and decorations yesterday, but thinking that might be the last time - too much effort, will just go with some decorations and lights next year. |

This is my second christmas and I can't get into the spirit. They don't do it well here and there's no atmosphere in the shops. Saying that I still prefer being here in the warm than freezing back home. Gail |

I must admit I do miss the warm and snuggly Christmas, the joy of not having to travel in bad weather for a few days and watching all those movies on the tv with a pile of choccies! |

Maybe it depends on the people. The in laws do proper Christmas and if anything I'd call it uber-trad round there (e.g. gift giving and unwrapping all done in turn instead of the usual 'f*** it, just pile in everyone' that I'm used to). Other than their tendency to out-Christmas us poms the only thing different is the heating bill. Even then the first Christmas we had here on holiday it was cold and wet, and IIRC Hobart actually had some snow on Christmas Day. |

Heard the windows is about the pig 'Olivia' and my friends 3 year olds loved it but they are into Olivia. Thanks for the suggestions. There is Dendy Park next week and passed Albert Park today and could see a sign for carols in the park there too. We are going to put up decorations next few days but agree it is not the same but we can live with that for the warmer weather over the summer holidays! Spent the previous 2 summer holidays in the UK in the rain most of the time and it was just so miserable. So, happy silly season everyone or should I say happy relaxed season everyone!!! |

Went Christmas Shopping at Fountain Gate yesterday. Went early (about 9 ish) place was empty. This is what I like about Christmas in Oz as I hate shopping at the best of times. Managed to get most presents sorted - hurray! Gill X :waving: |

I'm just embracing the differences being our first christmas too. We've been to carols on the oval at our youngests school tonight and it was really lovely. I like the more relaxed feel to everything instead of all the mad hussle and bussle. Will be really strange not having a crimbo jumper though :) |

Its our 2nd year, still feels strange but also good being in the warmth, our 2-boys (11 & 8) prefer it, they love the fireworks in the city on NYE. Hopefully this year we can catch-up with a few other britvics if the meeting is still set for boxing day and maybe any other families which are going on NYE's, I'm sure we can find a nice bar someone for a few beers    |

oooh missed the Swedish Christmas Fair, any more Christmas fairs happening??? I have heard the Christmas lights around Ivanhoe are worth a trip to see. We bought our tree from the Rotary Club in Essendon again this year and we are going to attend the local carols by candlelight, I would love to go to the city one but I think you need a ticket? The one on Xmas eve (think its called Sydney Myers Bowl?) and yes in the city is $95 for a family ticket if my memory serves me right. Heard it is lovely though but the one at Dendy park last week was great - and free! |
