Does anyone know what makes and models of DVD players are capable of playing both UK and Australian DVDs? Have alot of UK DVDs that aren't recognised by the DVD player we we bought over here. A sales agent in Good Guys suggested that some cheap models are capable of playing both types but he couldn't identify a particular brand. Thanks |

Hi You need one with a multi-chip in it to recognise the different area codes on your UK dvds. Many yonks ago when we got our first one (400 quid in those days!) the only one left in the shop was a multi-chip one so we took it not realising at the time how handy it would be! |

Most DVDs that are region coded can be unlocked with a code you can generally get from five minutes Googling. Presumably the manufacturer can't be bothered to make half a dozen different models to cover the region and simply makes one that gets locked to this or that region during production, so finding the code to unlock is all you need to do. A substantial number here are sold unlocked and our experience at JB Hi-Fi was that the staff knew which were which (I'd guess that only machines that are made only for this region and aren't available anywhere else will be forever stuck on region 4 so look for players that are also sold in Europe and North America), but if you're finding otherwise I suggest you shortlist a few models that you like the look of in the shop, then Google the model numbers for unlock codes when you get home. If you find there's an unlock code for your preferred player then even if you got it home and it wouldn't play your UK bought Blackadder DVDs you should be able to use the unlock code. Alternatively it might be worth thinking about moving to Blu-ray since unlike the DVD format Australia and the UK are in the same region. |

we got 2 from aldi 29.99 each the plan was to change 1 to uk region and 1 for Aus but haven't got round to changing it yet. The brand is Tevion and we have found that some of our dvd's from home have worked. |

Multi zone and most of the really cheap ones are as they are not set for any region. We have a couple fifty nine dollar ones and they are fine, however I think just ask everyone uses one so I do not know why they bother with everyone travelling these days and buying dvds all over the place. |

We were going to do the same and just brought one of the Tevion players from ALDI as that was all they had left. Lucky we did because suprise, suprise it plays all UK and Aus dvds. Very happy! Maybe you could sell your second one on here Tammy for a healthy profit? |

I was thinking the same. And if it's playing regions 2 and 4 it's very likely to play region 1 as well. Welcome to the world of cheap Yank DVDs with the full parcel on instead of the limited extras they so often stick non-American markets with (Battlestar Galactica, I'm thinking of you there :realmad: ). |

Not necessarily, some DVD's are manufactured to be region 2 and region 4. |

All our DVD players are multi region and we bought them from JB Hi Fi (Pioneer, Panasonic, LG, etc). JB Hi Fi sells DVD players with codes for Region 4 but in reality are multi region-ask. They are not allowed to display multi region on the boxes. |

Didn't know that, but I still think that with the ACCC here being against even the principle of region coding then the likelihood is that a player coping with one non region 4 disc will probably do discs from all regions. |

HI WUFC If you have a British TV and are living in Western Suburbs we have a British Multi Region DVD player that we dont need and could let you have for $20 Oh by their nature all DVD players are multi regional...but by some strnage law/code they arent allowed to say so or publish the unlock code..I have always used http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/hackable.asp Edited by Fenton, 10 Feb 2010, 08:05 AM.

We brought our British TV with us, but chucked it as we got a picture but no sound. Think we had the same problem with hooking up the video/dvd to an Aus telly - can't remember which one it was now though. A |

Our UK DVD works fine but we had to get a new video as the tuner is on a different wave length or something so it won't work. Aus tv has a diffent number of lines to UK tv which is why tv's need the top box and video's won't record. It's a shame as our UK video was a good one and our Aus one is just very basic but operating it is twice as hard! Still OH is building a media center.............or trying to! KK |

Well DigitalSet top boxes wont work as they use a different frequency in Australia I think its 4Mhz compared to 3 in the UK...Out video has always worked fine on an Australian TV though we have never tried to record on it |

We bought a Sony DVD player from Dick Smith a couple of years ago - the box it came in had Region 4 on it, but it plays all our DVDs (which include Regions 4, 2 and 1). |

If the TV's/set top boxes and DVD's have the red/white/yellow audio/video inputs/outputs you can mix and match. Last night I set up our old UK DVD recorder to record this way and it works fine. |
