what position are you hoping for , like charge nurse or summit!

am a registered nurse (in the operating theatre) and i sit on the pay scale at Grade2 year 9, and get $29 per hour basic, I also salary package which makes a massive difference to your wages, for example working full time at my grade i would probably take home around $56,000 a year plus and extra $9,000 due to salary packaging. Salary packaging is available in public hospitals and non-profit making private hospitals, it is also available in private, but you can only salary package into your superannuation. An still a bit confused about the salary packaging, but i believe it is a part of your wages in which you do not pay tax as this amound is essential for living (as far as i know i salary package my rent), others may salary package groceries . Other benefits are available, for example entertainment card, where you can eat out and keep your receipts and send them in, say every year or six months and the hospital will refund the tax your have paid on the meals, this is also available for accomm throughout australia and also for any eating out abroad.
There is also lease options on cars, but i dont know anything about this, but i have heard the docs usuing it and seem to be happy with it.

Super happens automatically like in the NHS, but if you are not happy with the super firm they are usuing (but most people are happy with the one for health professionals), then you can change to another one.

Havent looked into super too much yet, but i believe you can pay more in if you want and also use it as a type of insurance against death and illness from work, depending on what type of visa you are on (we are permenant residents), and i believe if we want to leave the country , then we have to leave our super and cant get at it, but if you come on a temp visa and leave the country it is possible to take your super with you.

Am not sure about places to work or positions available for paed nurses, the main hosp for children is the royal childrens hospital. http://www.rch.org.au/rch/index.cfm?doc_id=1495

Am sure some other peeps will come along with more advice.

Hello :waving:

I am a paediatric nurse too. Have been here in Melbourne for 2 and a half years. I work for Southern Health at Casey Hospital - small hospital, very low acuity i.e tonsils, adenoids, asthma, gastro and not much else!! it suits me for the moment though. there are 2 other hospitals in the Southern Health region - Dandenong and Monash Medical Centre. Don't know anything about the kids ward at Dandenong but Monash is very busy - there are 2 wards there. As Mags says the main hospital for kids is The Royal Childrens Hospital but it is too far (I think) to commute from where I live - but I know some people who do.

I have been qualified over 20 years and was a Division 1 grade 2 year 10 - though I have recently got a promotion and am now a Clinical Nurse Specialist - not much more pay for the fancy title though!! I only work 2 shifts a week so am probably not the best person to ask about wages but i come out with $1000 a fortnight which includes $349 salary packaging (which Mags has explained very well in her post!). I am in charge most of my shifts though which bumps the pay up - you get paid extra for being in charge here.
If you need any further info don't hesitate to get in touch,
Karenxx

P.S there are 3 standard shifts 0700-1530, 1300-2130 and 2100-0730
