Motoring - Victorian Driver's Licenses; When do I need to get one?

I have a regular EC driver's license (and a US one, but that probably doesn't count here) and wondered how long I can use it to drive on in VIC.

People have told me varying things: from 'no need to get a VIC one' to 'you have to get it within 3 months - or take your test again'.

I *think* you have 3 months from the date of arrival to take the theory test - afte that you have to take the practical one as well.

Any confirmation, anyone?

Cheers,
Anya.

Hiya Anya firstly welcome to the site. If you are going to be a permanent resident then you can use your licence for 3 months then you will need to apply for a vic one. If you will be a temp resident then you can use your licence(as long as its in english) for all of your stay have a look here

hope this helps you

It is not a full test for the UK licence. You ONLY have to sit a theory test.

As long as y ou read the book you will be fine.

We both passed first time. It really is not that hard and is multiple choice.

If on PR you have to have a victorian licence after 3 months of arriving to be legal to drive. We still have our UK ones intact they did not cut them up or stamp them.

I stand corrected. It is the same for many countries, including the US. The Vicroads book was ambiguous.
Nice to have some positive news;)

The rules vary from state to state. I am currently in Aus on a temp visa and i checked with vicroads who said my uk licence is fine to use, but in NSW i could only drive on my uk licence for first three months i was in the country.

Hope this helps.

Hi Nick,
The good bit is about my partner not having to pass the driving test, just the theory. ;)
He has driven in Oz several times with his US licence but he does have a slight problem with roundabouts. LOL.

I'm living out in the country (oo-arr) about 3 1/2 hours drive east of Melbourne, has anyone else non-city based noticed that when you get to major cities e.g. Melbourne, Adelade & Sydney that "road rage" becomes more prevalent?

I'm talking about incidents such as last time we were in melbourne my partner was driving and she pulled out a bit wide at a T-junction to turn left. there was a car coming towards us but it was nowhere near when the mrs. pulled out and the guy in the car was waving his finger in a provocative manner at us as if we were scum of the earth. I wanted to turn around and speak to this guy to see what his problem was but the wife was having none of it, anyways I suppose that would have made me guilty of inciting road rage incident too...

What are other people's experiences?

Hi All,

Can anyone confirm whether I would need to apply for a Victorian Driving licence within 3 months of moving to Melbourne.

I am emigrating but will be on a Temp 457 Visa. I've read contradicting comments about this. Some say I need to apply within 3mths, while others say I can continue to drive on my current UK licence, as I'm on a temp visa  However, once becoming a PR (which will take 2.5-3yrs I guess inc application submission) I would then have to apply for the VIC licence.

Can anyone confirm which one is correct?

Thanks all,

Chorlton

You only need to change your licence when you become PR. On a temp visa you can drive as long as you like on your UK licence.

Note: for the 3 month limit for people who become PR; this limit is the length of time you can drive on your existing licence; it is not a limit by which you have to change your licence. You can change your licence at 4 months, if you want, and the change process will be the same as if you did it at 2 months. The only difference is that in the first case you would not be allowed to drive between the end of the 3 month and the time you get your licence.

Hi all,
When I came to melbourne I just had my learners from the UK and I found VicRoads Crazy they would not reconize my learners but would reconize the date I got it on then I took my test which was a drive around the block an angle park and a chat about the olympics :realmad:
No would there's so many bad drivers, have you noticed no-one can do round abouts :ugh:

Drivers seem to manage roundabouts perfectly well in my bit of Victoria. Generally the drivers where I live are better than the Brits where I used to live. They tend to use the lane most appropriate for their exit and the indication is much better (and correct).

I guess drivers where you live don't do roundabouts the same way as you do ;) :D
