Suburbs - Which to avoid and why?

Hi. I have 3 young kids - ages 7,5,3 - and looking for a place to settle in is a big issue. I've seen threads on BE regarding recommended suburbs in Melbourne. How about looking the other way around. What are those that we should avoid for valid reasons? I don't mean to offend those living in such places esp if you love it there. If you need to counter, please feel free. Your inputs will help me and many out there, to decide wisely. Being a soon-to-be-Victorian :D , I just want to do my homework ahead.

Thanks a lot. This site is soooo great!

Hi Hannah, a couple are a little bit rough, Dandenong & Broadmeadows, maybe Altona to.
Springvale is like little Vietnam so probably best giving that a miss to.
Is there any particular suburbs you were thinking of?

Thanks, Bordy! We have friends and relatives staying in Flemington and North Melbourne. We thought it'll be easier for us to stay near them. Any views on these areas?

Thanks a lot...

Cheers,
Hannah

Well you would certainly be close to the city & near the Flemington racecourse for the Melbourne cup. Nothing wrong with them, close to markets etc, only downside could be that it might be fairly busy but then again some people prefer it that way.

If you are happy living close to the CBD these areas are fine, but busy and noisy. There are some new housing developments close to the area.
www.realestate.com.au is a useful site.
I have used it when finding rental properties.

Would agree on Dandy, Springvale and Broady Bordy :D Wouldn't agree on Altona - don't be put off by the oil refinery or chemical works, the area on the beach side of the railway line is nice and houses along The Esplanade go for well over a million bucks regularly. A few others I would add would be Footscray, Sunshine and St Albans. Some inner suburbs such as Carlton, Fitzroy and Northcote to the north; Flemington, Kensington, North Melbourne to the west (yep Nth Melb is more west) and South Melbourne wouldn't have been recommended in the past but the 'trendies' and yuppies are pushing the traditional residents out and forcing property prices up in their desire to be close to the city.

However, in summary, I would say you are best avoiding the suburbs favoured by recent migrants. :D :D (you know I don't mean it).

OzT, Footscray is up and coming, or will be very soon.

There is some development on, and it is becomong like Seddon - again quite a studenty/trendy area. It will take a while for it to become fully gentrified or a fully fledged family suburb.

I was talking to someone at work about Melbourne suburbs.

We came to the conclusion that some of the nicest sounding ones, are probably the least desirable e.g. Broadmeadows, Sunshine LOL
