I heard state primary schools in Melbourne/Victoria area are quite ok, if not good. Can anyone share their thoughts/experiences with state schools? Can you kindly name drop any suggested schools as well? As a mommy of 3 young buds - they're 3,5 and 7, I'd appreciate your inputs a lot.

Cheers,

Hannah :surf:

As a state school teacher and a parent who sent her kids (now all adult) to state schools, I agree that they provide a good education.
There are many schools. Do you know where you will be located?

Thanks Meryl. Your words are assuring enough. We initially plan to stay near North Melbourne area. I believe that very few families live near Southbank areas, but we're considering that area as well. Are there good schools within that area? Since we have friends and relatives within those areas metioned, we plan on staying near them at first. Eventually, I prefer to move further out of the city like Geelong or Bendigo.

Not sure if you would like living at Southbank Hannah. Its more of an enterainment area than a place for families to live. Its got the Casino & restaurant strip etc, might get a bit noisy at night over the weekend. If you did find a place there I'd imagine it would be quite expensive to, your right on the doorstep of the city centre.

Bordy, Thanks. That was my reservation as well. Apart from having friends in those area, its not really one place I would fancy living.
My search continues......

Errol St PS, North Melbourne:)

I do not know schools in Southbank area so well. You would need to look round South Melbourne. Southbank development is relatively new and I am north of the Yarra.

I am away from home and using AOL :ziplip: so I have a little trouble accessing sites.

My kids went to Princes Hill PS and Princes Hill Secondary School.

Just one more question: Do you know any good performing schools in Melbourne? One that has excellent academic and extracurricular reputation? I'm convinced Melbourne schools are good, but can we pick "the cream of the crop"?

Thanks....

What year level will your eldest enter?
Many schools with high reputations (not always deserved in my opinion;) are zoned as they have so many applicants.
Is your eldest academically gifted?
I have some thoughts.

Hi Meryl,

My eldest is 7y/o and she's a consistent A student. She's currently in 2nd grade and on top of her class. I would want to give her the best options. Same with her 2 brothers, still in pre-school.When we move to Oz next year, I'll be looking at a place near the favored school. Our top priority in selecting a suburb is the school.

I'd really appreciate your opinions.

Cheers,

Hannah

Hi Hannah,
I misread your first post. I thought you had a child that was older and ready for secondary school. Please bear with me. It was early morning and I was about to say good-bye to my partner.
I am flying home today but his flight to his home state was early.
I will be offline for a couple of days.
We do not have league tables that compare schools. My opinions are based on local knowledge but it is limited.
I will get back to you after my return.

Hi Hannah,
I am a bit out of my depth with current info on such primary schools. I searched for gifted student programs especially one called Bright Futures but the sites are down until late September.

I now realise why the site is down. The state govt has just announced that they are reviewing gifted ed programs. I wonder, given the priority you place on academic achievement, whether you might prefer the independent school system.

The independent school system is just as fine, Meryl. Though I know my child is academically gifted, I don't want to put too much toil on her. School should be as fun and educational to a child. If I can get a school with a wonderful support for my child, I'd be very happy. By support, I do mean a school that looks at a child's IQ and EQ.

Have a nice day....

A child's IQ is assessed in only special circumstances in the state system. It requires a referral to a school psychologist.
I do hope you find the right school for your child. I agree about EQ being important as well. However I had my children schooled where they could mix with students from a diverse range of backgrounds and with equally diverse levels of ability.
What I value important in education does not necessarily reflect the values of the norm:)

Meryl,

You've been such a wonderful help. God bless you. I'll be looking at North Melb Errol St. and Princes Primary for now. If you can recommend any other schools irregardless of location, I'd appreciate it one more time.

Cheers,

OzT,

The site is great. Highly recommended to all, not just parents. If people would realize the value of a high EQ, we'll be raising a successful and stable bunch of kids.
BTW, EQ = emotional quotient
IQ = Intellectual quotient

-just in case some may be wondering what those acronyms are though I blv many knows them already. Also, for the sake of those who may have forgotten :D

Cheers,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

I saw from one of your posts about the possibility you will look at Bendigo as a place to move to, down the track.

That is where I will be living when we arrive back in Oz later this week. My sister is there currently and has her 2 kids in a wonderful school. They are in primary (oldest is finishing Grade 3 and youngest is going into Grade 1 next yr). There are also several excellent Secondary schools in Bendigo.

My sister knows alot more about them than I do, and when I get home, will see what info I can find out for future info for you.

Hi Hels,

Thanks so much. I'd appreciate it so much. We have no kins nor friends in Bendigo so we'll be starting from scratch. My kids and I will be the first to stay in Oz as my hubby will be finishing first his job contract with the bank. He'll be following after a year or two so we'd love to be around relatives in our first year to get adjusted. Thus, the choice of living in North Melbourne initially. Isn't it wonderful to have someone like a sister waiting for you when you arrive? It lessens the anxiety of migration....

I agree Bendigo is lovely even as I'm just researching on the area. So far, its on top of my list.

Safe trip on your journey this week dowunder. :plane: Have a nice day...
