hi, me, my wife and my 5 year old daughter are moving to melbourne area in early new year.
what we really need is some advice on suburbs for a young family.
I will be working in industry and my wife in childcare, we would like to live ideally within half hour to our jobs although we dont know where that will be yet but am i right in thinking there is more industry based jobs on the western side of the bay around the geelong area?
our budget for weekly rent will probably be around the $300 mark although we could probably go slightly over this if nessesary.
my dad is living in altona at the moment and says that although its not a great suburb at the moment, he can see it getting better and also he can walk to the beach in 5 minutes.
again we would like to live within 45 minutes of my dad, atleast for the 1st year of our migration anyway to help settle in.
could you give some advice please on the following and any others that you know of:

point cook - the old man says that this is quite nice and the rental prices seem good

williamstown - he says this is very nice but with rental prices to match

i like the look of geelong - what do you think

the east of the bay looks lovely, what are the job prospects near a place like mornington, and what is it like there

sorry for the long port, i know you get this sort of question all the time

If you want to be within a relatively easy commute of your father then you are probably talking western suburbs although from Altona via the Westgate Bridge you can get to the eastern and bayside suburbs within the time frame you mention. Altona, Altona Meadows, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee are popular with young families and there are plenty of industrial jobs nearby. Williamstown as you say is much more expensive. Check out domain.com.au or realestate.com.au to get an idea for what is going for $300 p.w. in this suburbs. Sanctuary Lakes is an upmarket estate built around a golf course and leisure complex in the Point Cook area but I'm not sure whether it is suitable for young families, although there are plenty of shops, schools, medical centres etc nearby. Get back to me if you need any more advice although your father seems to have the right 'gen'.

Oh, Geelong is worthy of consideration too. It is around 40 mins from Altona (making sure you don't go over 100 K's as the speed cameras are deadly!); has a good range of amenities and plenty of industry, nice area around Eastern Beach and on the doorstep of the surf beaches, Bellarine Peninsula and Great Ocean Road.

We now have a sub forum in the FAQ section regarding suburbs. Can I ask if anyone already living out in Victoria can put up a thread in there explaining a bit about the area they live so we will always have some inside info on the areas.......please
