Looks like a greate site once we have our own place and are looking for a broadband connection, but I struggled to find anything about dial-up in there. Anyone got any recomendations for reliable dial-up without 'lock-ins' that we can use for the first few weeks. Preferably something that won't create a charge against the phone account while we're staying with other people... Cheers, Chris (Edit: now found the 'dial-up forum' in whirlpool, but am still looking for a 'compare' feature...) |

I don't know of any dialup provider that won't result in a connection fee, sorry! It is just how it is done over here. Have you seen the pre-paid dialup packs you can get from Dick Smiths and similar? The provide you with so many hours usage through Bigpond (I think it is!) might be what you are looking for. |

BigPond (i.e. Telstra the largest Telco in Australia) do a reliable dial-up service and you can pick up a "kit (CD, etc) from almost anywhere. There are Telstra Shops in most malls and shopping centers as well. They charge by the 30" block (bizarre) and I have yet to see anyone that does not charge a "connection fee" (or "Flagfall"). We got stuck with 46Kbps dial-up for the first two weeks once we got here. Then I picked up a Telstra NextG 3G/WiFi PCMCIA card (A$299) on a 1GB Package for A$129/pm. This allows 1GB of traffic, unlimited time, upto 1Mbps pretty much anywhere in Australia where there is a cell tower. You should only need an address in Australia, your passport and driving license For a high use business user like yourself (and myself) its ideal. You can change packages month by month and can go up to 3GB traffic or as low as a "10 Hour" package for around A$30/pm. I think they lock you into a 12 month contract though, but if you come to Australia often or are moving out it's well worth it. I'm using it right now, because Telstra can't make up their mind if the rental house we have just moved into has Cable or not (it does, but their DB doesn't have the address!?) after they told me I could get 20Mbps ADSL2+ only to find out the exchange they put us on (Sandringham - SNDM) is only ADSL and so far away we only get 1Mbps :dur: |

When I first arrived I signed up with iprimus for phone and internet. They use to charge a flat rate $15 a month for the dialup access with nothing extra to pay for the phone call. It did have a fair use policy but I can't see 4 hours a day contravening the policy. Additionally all local calls were free. I've moved onto their 512 DSL which is $40 a month but has a 12Gb download limit. Al :) |
