Hi everybody,

Can anyone give me advice?
We had to take our son for a check up today, the specialist had lived in Melbourne for 16 months. We mentioned to him that we liked some of the new land sites which were built around lakes and wetlands, he advised us to stay away as snakes can be attracted to the fresh water in summer time.
Is this true?
Don't fancy sharing my breakfast with a tiger snake!
Only 15 weeks to go...... not that we are counting.

Michelle.

it's not a good mental image, must admit. However, I've never heard anything in the news about problems with snakes. We live near Lilydale Lake, and there are signs saying "Snakes live here" - but in 4 years, we have cycled, walked, and dragged kids around and around and never seen anything dodgy. There was a flasher at one stage, but that's another story...
I have read about dogs being bitten (and surviving) but its always been when they have headed off into the bushes.

I walked around Lilydale Lake yesterday with him outdoors and our daughter. It was a beautiful day, with people walking, jogging, cycling round the lake.

There were people fishing (the Fly Fishing Association were there having some sort of comp) and there were lots of people using the BBQ's, lots of kids playing in the big play area, and everyone just seemed to be generally having a good time.

It reminds me why I wanted to come back home to Oz :D

We live next to a wetlands lagoon, where there are reputed to be black tiger snakes. Some local people have seen them, but sightings aren't that frequent these days as there are nature and bike trails, which means there are more people around - not quiet enough for the snakes. We have cats, so of course I've been a bit worried about them as well, but the fact remains that the snakes were here first, and are native, whereas we Brits & our cats aren't!

So we will just have to take care & learn to live with the local inhabitants, even if some of them are poisonous! I have printed off emergency first aid instructions for both us & the pets, and have tel nos etc of the local hospital/vet handy just in case. Chances are we'll never need them, but it's good to be prepared....

There is a useful web site on the subject at:

Cheers,
Anya.

Yep, there are signs posted along bike tracks in inner Melbourne near the Yarra. There are occasional instances of snakebite in the city. Mostly peope walking or riding in such areas know to wear appropriate footwear and be wary.

Thanks for all your replies, I have printed the website you recommended Anya.
I will have no worries looking at new land estates near wetlands/lakes.
I have heard so many silly stories about spiders and snakes, when you are so near to departing it's nice too be reassured when you have young children.Especially a little boy who thinks he's Indiana Jones.(without the snake phobia)
Trouser snakes a bit of a worry! Any antidote for that one.
I can think of a few only can't print them.Ohhhhh the pain.........

Cheers
