ROFL.
Doug took his a theory test a few weeks ago. No mention of pending changes.
Still he was proud of his 94% and it did help him to learn a few rules.

Yes it's definately true.

All you need is your UK license, passport, proof of address and of course $139 (10 years).

They give you the license approx 5 mins after paying.

What a bonus.

Vic roads rule book for sale any offers :thumbs up:

Doug is from the US. Is it only for UK licence holders?

Does this mean that if you have a UK driving licence you dont have to take a driving test or theory test or any kind of test? Because my brother in law had to take a driving test although he lived in Canberra at the time.

b************!!!! Did my test the week before christmas. o well passed it no probs although they (the clowns at vicroads in burwood) did give me a P platers licence by mistake which it took another hour or so to sort out with them.. Out of interest, did they revoke your UK licence? the woman at vicroads too my UK licence off me which was an old-style paper licence.

If you pass your test in Oz & then want to drive in the UK when you go back to visit, you can - see:DVLA - Foreign Licences Australian licences are okay for upto 12 months.

Can I buy/insure a car before I have got a Victoria license, and do I need to have a permanent address to insure/register it? We are planning on taking a month or two in holiday lets to get a feel for the 'burbs before renting, but don't want to have to rent a car for that whole period.

I think you must be able to. Those on temp resident visas use their UK licences for as long as they're temporary residents and I can't imagine there's no way for them to buy and insure a car. Might mean a couple of hoops to jump through, possibly dealing with specialist insurers or something, but it must be possible on a UK licence. However, the permanent address thing might be a bigger barrier since Vicroads and insurance companies will probably want one. I'd email Vicroads and ask them if I were you. If it turns out that it's impractical to buy without a permanent address I suggest Rent-A-Bomb for cheaper car hire.
