hi, does anyone know how much roughly my wife can expect to be earning as a nursery nurse/ childcare worker in or around melbourne.

we have looked on the job sites but they dont seem to mention anything about wages, although there seem to be plenty of jobs on offer.

also she is trained to NNEB (diploma) standard, does anyone know how this will fare in australia, will she need to get some sort of skill assessment done, she hasnt had her skills assessed as i am down as the main skilled applicant

any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks

There certainly are a huge number of jobs in Melbourne for childcare workers.
RPL is always a sticky subject and I suggest that you email holmsglen TAFE or chisholm TAFE ,the community services departments.
Often jobs here say 'award wages' and actually finding out what that award rate is , is a nightmare .It doesn't seem in vogue to talk about pay.
There are some listed vacancies for 'traineeships' in childcare centres and they will expect you to be studying toward cert111 or certv in childrens services , whilst working. That is assuming aus doesn't recognise your wife's quals.
If she is a qualified nurse she may wish to consider looking for work in the health services instead . Have a look at www.employment.byron.com.au
This site lists all the newspaper and other jobsite vacancies.
for community appoint ments look at www.infoxchange.com.au
dhs.vic.gov.au is the department of human services, partly responsible for the provision of state run child care .They may be able to assist you re RPL.

Hi,

I have been looking at childcare work, nannying and nursery nurse to cover me over the school hols. A word of advice ensure you have an upto date first aide certificate other wise you will NOT be able to work. you must have a current certificate and for it to include CPR.

The wages are pretty naff compared to the UK, you would be earning anything from $10- 16per hour. That is what i was quoted by one agency and even less for baby sitting, they rob you blind over here in percents if you join an agency. But like Melhelpinghand said email the tafes to find out exactly what you can be earning.

There is a website you can look at too
http://www.wagenet.gov.au/WageNet/HomePage/HomePage.asp

you should be able to get a rough idea from here. THisone list childcare, if you are working an 8 hour day you would be earning on average $12.75 an hour.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Katy :D

casual work tends to pay more per hour, part-time a bit less and full time
even worse !
Some options to think about would be an integration aide in schools or after school care.
Level 2 first aid is mandatory as is a police check ($22) prior to employment.
Any activities working with children require these checks.

do you get the police check done in oz or before we come,

the wages are pretty poor but they are just as bad in the uk, where we are anyway (s.wales), my wife works as manager of her day nursery at the moment and is on £6 per hour so roughly 15 dollars so it sounds like she wont be taking a huge drop,

The police check are done here in Oz and the employer sometimes
pays for it ($22 ish) or they pay and deduct it from your wages.
The govt is introducing legislation to further protect children but
I don't believe it will have a huge impact. They are considering
allowing information other than convictions to be released
if relevent to children ie restraining orders through violence,
I would imagine that Managers at c/c centres will be paid more and the
growth in private centres is huge .
