Don't mind at all. Out towards a place called Bruthen. The nearest big towns are Bairnsdale about 25-30kms away and Lakes Entrance 35kms. In the other direction is the Great Alpine Road leading up to Mt. Hotham, Alpine National Park etc. |

Wow...thats a beatiful part of the country!! Gorgeous!! We used to go camping at Buchan...the caves there are sensational!! So many lovely spots around there. You are pretty lucky to have all that on your doorstep. Do you work over there? Have you lived there long? Hels |

I came here on a partner visa and as the missus is from this area I ended up living here. I've been to Buchan caves a couple of times. The best place for camping though is any of the camp sites in Croajingalong or Cape Conran IMO. I do farm work here and casual labouring like paving etc. it is very hard to get any decent permanent employment in country areas such as this. I've had a few job interviews for permanent work in Bairnsdale recently, but there seems to be an unwritten rule that they prefer to employ locals (e.g. people who have lived in the area longest) over newcomers. I can probably afford to keep up the casual work for another six months or so but unless something comes up, we may have to look at moving to another area. It would be interesting to see if there are any other expats living out this way. So far I have only met two (English people), but they have been in Australia for 20+ years. I met one about a year ago in the local bookies, he had just moved to Bairnsdale to work at patties pies but they wouldn't take him on permanent so he left. The other English person I met here is married to the landlord at one of the local pubs, they took it over about 18months ago after moving from King Island. I think she moved to Australia when she was quite young though so although technically an expat, she has spent most of her time over here. I don't think she's the sort of person I'd socialise with anyway. oh well, off to thin some apples in about 40mins so I got to go. NJJ |

Oh yeah!! I found that there was definatly that kind of mentality out that way as far as newcomers go. Luckily when I moved there I had a job to go to, so work was never really an issue. However, just meeting people and "breaking in" wasnt easy. I only lived there for a year in the end. Moved over here to Bendigo where we are now. Alot more work, a bigger center and quite a bit more central to most regions of Victoria. I wish you luck and hope you find work soon. If you were on this side of the State I might have been able to help as I work in employment. Hels |

Thanks for your input Helen. I haven't had any problem getting on with the locals, I am in the cricket team and I go out drinkin' with some of them etc. I just wish I could get myself a permanent job!! Got an intervew at a tool hire place with a view to becoming permanent set up for this week so fingers crossed eh... NJJ |

Hi NJJ, I've got family around that part of the country, Sarsfield to be exact. I'm aware of a couple of Brits who live in Bairnsdale but as far as I'm aware they've been living in Aus for years. Have you found any others in the area? |

Sarsfield eh.... Not organic farmers by any chance are they?? I goto Bairnsdale a few times a week as a few pals of mine live there. I'm a member at the Bairnsdale RSL too (cheap beer + free pool!). I live the other side of Bairnsdale in Hillside (Lindenow). the only other "brit" in Bairnsdale that I know of is married to the landlord of the Grand Terminal Hotel. I have only seen her from afar to say hello to but she appears to be a scary thunderous beast with whom i wish to have little involved!! I did meet an English sounding guy in a pub about a year ago who said he's been here since the 1980's and had just started work at Patties, although he was that plastered I could not get much more info out of him!! NJJ OH, wait I did meet another brit. A welsh fella called Paul. I played him at pool in the Club Hotel, Bairnsdale a few times at weekends about feb/march time last year, but haven't seen him since as I dont go in the Club hotel much anymore. |

No, not organic farmers... at least if they are they haven't told me. <_< The one thing I can remember about the RSL in Bairsndale is that every time I go past, it seems to magically double in size. It's weird! You'd think that there couldn't be that many people who use it... I mean Bairnsdale isn't that big. But that doesn't seem to stop it from enlarging every time I drive past! One of the ex-pats that I know of used to work in Myers... until it shut. What she's doing now I'm not sure though. But as I said earlier, she's been in the country for 20-30 years. Still hadn't lost her accent though. |

the rsl was rebuilt a few years ago (before I got here), the only reason being so the legend goes is so they could fit 100's of poker machines inside :yuck: The member's draw does seem to double in size every week though as they draw the number of a member but you have to be on the premesis at the time to win the prize, but as there are about 3,000 members and gawd knows how we would all fit inside at the same time (unless they made extra space by taking out the poker machines I s'pose!!) hardly anyone is ever present when their number is drawn out, therefore forcing the rollover... i believe it only goes off about twice a year!! I might pop down there for a few games of the old twos up on anzac day as I went there last year and made quite a bit of money off the drunken servicemen!! NJJ |

I see on one of the other threads you say you used to live in Bairnsdale. Which street did you used to live in?? I sometimes do casual work in Bairnsdale over at the farm on Picnic Point. |

I was born in Bairnsdale, and at that point we were living on Crooke St. It's right up the back of East Bairnsdale. Our place backed onto the Morrass. Then from there we shifted to Francis street, just behind the telephone exchange. That was quite a while ago though. Bairnsdale's grown a lot since I left. It's a bit odd whenever I go back just seeing what's changed. |
