I'm worried!!!! :o

Does this lack of responses mean it is not that lovely in Vic. or is it just that everyone posting on here is just hoping it's ok once they get there?!!!!!
Anyone out there who does know what it's really like?
Why you want to live there?!!

All replies gratefully received!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.

Sorry Julie, missed the post.
Well I love; Obviously the weather, the mixture of hot & cooler days, very little problem with humidity.

The free BBqs in most parks where you can take along your own food & a bottle of wine.
The beach is only half hour drive away, so many beaches & hardly anyone on them, ( apart from St Kilda maybe)

The fact that we are not overun by Ex Pats like some parts of Perth & Brissy.

The Sports, especially Aussie Rules

The theatres & concerts, just to much on, it would cost a fortune. This week we had John Farnham & Tom Jones, Rod Stewart & Cher.

The restaurants from almost any country you care to eat from.

The little cafes & bars on the pavements down the peninsula.

etc etc etc

Hi Julie

We have in fact got STNI visa for SA so we have to head for Adelaide for the first 2 years but at the same time we had a panic on whether or not SA would be for us so we started looking elsewhere. Anyway I had always found AdelaideBrits as a great place to find out info on SA yet there was nothing for Victoria hence the birth of this website......purely out of me being nosey  It is still a lot smaller than AB though so please bear with us when it comes to replies ;)

We're still undecided as I have found that both States offer similar to complete opposites but both have an appeal. We have decided that once we get there we will check out both places in fact hubbie is now also dithering about Tasmania so it looks like the first 2 years will be spent having lovely reccy trips all over Oz

Melbourne is much larger than Adelaide but then you also have some other larger places like Geelong etc where as with SA you have Adelaide and then much smaller places dotted around like Victor Harbour etc. Victoria also has some beautiful national parks and tends to be more green than SA. It is said though you can get the 4 seasons in one day there though..

I also wanted to say have you checked out the link section as OzTennis put up a rake of links in a thread which is pinned in there.

Good luck as I know how hard it is to make a decsion.

Sasha :)

Hi Julie

Our situation is that as I am going to be sponsered by an employer based in Melbourne we will have to live in Victoria. Melbourne has been voted one of the the worlds most liveable cities and people I have met who live there, say it has it all, the best shopping, excellant beaches, fantastic restaraunts, etc but they are biased (lol). I think the only disadvantage would be the changeable weather but coming from the UK its still got to be a damn sight better than here! :D
When we first staterd the process we were looking at SIR in South Australia and I think that would have been lovely, a lot more laid back than melbourne with a far more mediteranean climate. However Melbourne here we come, flying out on the 7th March, cant wait. We are undecided on areas the Mornington penninsulal is beautiful but may be a bit too far to commute and the other of the bay is Geelong which is the same commute distance from CPD but close to Avalon airport which will be great for me as I will have to travel intersate regularly.
We are going to make up our mind when we get there so for now it could be anywhere around Melbourne!!!
Good luck with your plans, hope to see you on the other side :boat:

Avalon is not an airport from which you can travel interstate unless you are a pilot or you can hire a plane

This applies to any Melbourne airport, except Tullamarine.

Hope people weren't asleep for the whole 3 days I left between my first and second post though (nobla)!!!! Lol !!!! :P

Have a great reccie, nobla and let us all know how you get on and what it's really like. Good time to go to suss out the weather I would think. Must be generally warmer than here most of the time don't you think, as on a line of latitude (approx. 38*) it is the same as southern Spain!!!! :)

I put a post on British Expats with the same question yesterday and got lots of replies there too. It sounds beautiful!!!Take a look.

Keep the replies coming if there's more. Will advertise this site again I think on B.Expats, the more the merrier.

Excellent site Aussie Dreamer, will also check out OzTennis link. Thanks.

Several of my friends fly from Avalon on a cheap airline :
http://www.avalonairport.com.au/
One thing they told me to watch out for is the airport taxes there. The cheap lines might look cheap but the taxes bump the price up.

I was impressed with VirginBlue - but that was from Tullermarine:-)

Hi Bordy
I am going to be working for a company called Solidity Technology installing software in Universities and Colleges. The company are based in the CPD in Melbourne and as I have to travel interstate being close to an airport would be nice but we also want to be near the beach. When we arrive we will check the areas out and their distance from everything.
I know that you can fly interstate with Jetstar from Avalon to Sydney and Brisbane.
I have been really lucky to have been out twice to Australia since Novemebr with this company and so have travelled a lot internally in Oz already, usually with Virgin and Quantas, oh, and regional express - now that was an interesting flight.
:eye popping:
We are looking forward to meeting you all on the 2nd April in Mornington.
Sasha, we hope to get to your meet at Bridgend before we go, it will be nice to see you and your family again.

Cant wait now, flights booked for the 7th March, Australia here we come !!!!!! :D

You were going to the JF/TJ concert weren't you? If so, how was JF? (I'm not interested in TJ!)

I'll leave the 'what do I love about Victoria comments' to the newcomers. It is where I was born and brought up and where my family and some of my closest friends live so that's enough for me. At the moment we live in Scotland and I could make up a long list of what I love about it. In time we'll go back to Melbourne and we'll visit Scotland frequently so I reckon (in the words of 'the Oils'), I get the best of both worlds.

Hi Oz T, Farnham was terrific, its the third time Ive seen him & he just gets better. Maybe it was because he really only did half a show, Tom Jones did first half, but he came out after the break & did all his old favourites.
Last time I saw him the first half was a bit boring really then after half time he got into the old rock & roll stuff & had everone on there feet.
BTW Tom Jones was much better than I thought he would be, wasn't a bad concert for two old blokes. :P

'It's not unusual' for TJ concerts to be good eh? :D

I was sent JF's special that he did on Channel 7 (about a year ago?) to coincide with his 'Last Time' tour and semi-retirement from touring. Excellent stuff. I believe he is also going to give (has already?) a concert with Dame Kiri De Kanewa at Werribee Mansion. My mother also tells me that the NZ PM kicked up a great fuss about JF performing at some ANZAC concert - as if he was an undesirable or would launch into 'Sadie' (from his Johnny days) on such a solemn occasion.

P.S. Western Bulldogs doing well (albeit not AFL season), yippee!!

Thanks for the link - interesting. I too can see both sides and it required the agreement of the A and the NZ of ANZAC so if the NZ PM wouldn't agree 'fair dues'. As well as remembering those who fell I think we should also reflect on what it was all for so it doesn't happen again.

I reckon the appropriate thing would be for Eric Bogle to sing 'And the Band played Waltzing Matilda' at Gallipoli and 'No Man's Land' (a.k.a The green fields of France') in Flanders because we never learn:

Ah, young Willie McBride, I can't help wonder why,
Did all those who lay here really know why they died?
And did they believe when they answered the call,
Did they really believe that this war would end war?
For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain,
The killing and dying were all done in vain,
For, young Willie McBride, it all happened again,
And again and again and again and again.

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.

P.S. sorry for the diversion from the thread
