Hello, As we won’t be able to go skiing this year we thought we could take the kids to Mt Donna Buang to do some tobogganing. I have the following questions. Has anyone been before? Are there entrance fees? What are the facilities like? I presume chains are a requirement – can you get them on the way? Thanks in advance. Alistair |

Its fabulous! No need for chains as the road is always kept clear. Entrance fee is about $7 if my memory serves me well. We often get there very early before the gates are patrolled, so don't pay. No, we don't get there early to avoid paying, just to have the slopes to ourselves. Check out www.ski.com.au and follow the links to Donna Buang to get a daily snow report. There are toilets and a van selling drinks, hot chips etc, plus they do toboggan hire. We bought the kids a toboggan as they charge a fair bit for hire, well we thought so, plus the van only makes its way up a bit later than we get there. It does get quite busy on a nice day, but a great day out. Sue |

Thanks Sue. I think we'll be buying the toboggans as well - I think we'll get years of use out of them. Cheers Alistair |

This sounds fantastic. I went there in January (my friend lives not far from Mt DB) and the views from the top of the look out tower were amazing. It must look beautiful covered in snow. Must add this to my list of things to do when we move to Melb. :) leh |

Geez leh, took that route upto the lookout tower and was a nervous wreck by the end!!! Scenery spectacular but the road was "a lot to be desired" in places - don't do single track roads well :D Did the Rainforest Gallery (think that's what it was called!) on the way down which was wonderful. Saw some wallabies bounding across the road which made my day - lovely to see them in their natural habitat. D D  |

Its also worth keeping an eye out for lyrebirds. We have seen them on that road quite a few times. Very special! |

We called at Donna Buang last Monday and it was great. There's a guy working from a trailer selling buckets of chips and doughnuts and he rents out toboggans for $9 per day each. There are three toboggan runs all about 100m from the car park. There was about 8cm of snow when we went and it is apparently quite unusual to have so much at this time of the year. I went up to the summit which is another 100m or so up from the toboggan runs and the views are excellent. You have to be pretty fit to scale the lookout tower though and don't mind heights! We stayed at Mt Toolebewong nearby and saw a Lyrebird and a Wombat there in the wild. |

Keep an 'ear' out for the lyrebird as well - one of nature's best mimics. My brother is a bit of an expert on matters flaura and fauna and when we were up at Thompson's Reservoir and Walhalla he kept correcting me. That a kooka, no it's a lyrebird imitating a kooka; that's a maggie, no it's a lyrebird imitating a maggie and so on it went. You hear them often (usually unwittingly) but seldom see them in the wild, to see them is a bonus. OzTennis |
