We are hoping to arrive in Melbourne in August of this year and would like to ask if anyone could help out with the important things to do on arrival there. By that I mean medicare and so on. We've got a bit of any idea of what's what but just want to check if we have forgotten anything. Any hints and help would be most appreciated. Thanks Lorraine  |

Hello Lorraine First of all go to Vic roads office to get your Victorian drivers licence; this will make life a lot easier for you in all sorts of situations (for ID purposes). It costs about $140 for a 10 year licence. You don't have to take the written test now, unlike when I arrived in November, if I had waited another month and a half, I could have saved myself a lot of time and effort. I digress... Also, go to the Tax office to get your tax file number. Sorry I dont know how long that takes as, we used the same ones we had for our working holiday visa. Medicare: Wait about 2-3 weeks before going to see them; the have to wait for immigration to contact them with your details and that you have permanant residency. This also gives you time to have an address. Hope this helps, There is a book you can get to help also from a guy in Brissy called the Immigrants Guide to living and working in Australia. I think you can only get it on the net. Someone else may know more. Tony P.S. Remember to smile for your DL photo: It's gonna be with you for a decade! :) |

We recently went to the ATO and all they did was direct Doug to a computer and get him to enter his visa number. No need to visit the office but the link would come in handy. I'm afraid I don't have it. We have just come from DIMIA so there was a lot happening. Meryl |

Thanks for the info about the tax file number that's really important stuff and good to have.
:) I have passed the link to Stu for him to have a look at it. But I take it you can't do anything with it until you are actually in Oz, is that right? Thanks again Lorraine  |

Hi I'm in Melbourne at the mo' doing all this. The address thing is central. However, Medicare gave me a Medicare number on the spot with just my passport and an aussie postal address (a friend's). ATO did indeed bung me onto the web. You need your passport number and an Aussie address for them to send the stuff to. Went into HSBC and tried to open an account there and then, but as I had no offical documentation with an Aussie address I could not proceed. Far easier was the Commonwealth Bank, which since I had started the process via the Migfrant Banking Office in London somethime earlier was much easier. Just take along UK passport, UK drivers licence and a certain letter from the London office once you have set up a holding account in London then it was plain sailing, as long as you can give them an Aussie address when you activate the account in Australia. The website 'www.pomsdownunder.com' sell a very good book on the things you need to keep in mind when migrating. Check it out. Neil |
