Not my favourite area but I prefer the other side of the river.
If you have blonde hair, wear designer labels, drive prestige cars and like paying premium prices it could appeal.
My daughter had a part-time position in an upmarket drycleaners there and had lots of stories to tell. ;)
I suspect that you would look at private schools if considering South Yarra.
There are some beautiful houses but the main streets are very congested and busy.
Just my very biased opinion.

Speaking as non blonde South Yara residents...
...its not necessarily an expensive place to rent, and you do have a lot of advantages in terms of being near to the city (even without a car you would be in easy reach of the city centre, Chapel Street shops & entertainment (including cafes & cinemas), Albert Park, the MCG, the Botanical gardens...)
...if you're thinking of buying...it is one of the most expensive suburbs of Melbourne (following Toorak and Brighton) ...having said that it you were moving from the equivalent area in UK (say a posh suburb of a major city) you would be quids in.
As with a lot of Melbourne suburbs, you wouldn't be far from main roads - but the side streets are often suprisingly quiet and leafy.
Can't comment on the schools - apart from some of the obnoxious brats I meet on the tram on the way to Melbourne grammar school in the mornings...

Thought blonde comment might get me into hot water. Sorry if I have offended you.

Agree about renting but for a family?

And the gardens are beautiful.

Yep, most residents would send kids to there or Wesley, St Michael's, Merton Hall etc.

Do you spend much time in Chapel St? I was there recently and found an amazing bazarre full of interesting items.

Usually I associate South arra with Toorak Rd.

Meryl,
no offence taken (you'll have to try harder)
South Yarra doesn't scream families at me either (due to prices and also I dont know how many houses have more than 2 bedrooms..alot of apartments in this area) - I guess most families with kids choose the outer suburbs
yep, I know the shops on Chapel St you're talking about - which reminds me, if you do happen to be shopping on Chapel St and you spot somebody else who still has full use of their eyebrows, stop me and say hello!
Lx
PS what do we have to do to get the dry cleaning stories out of you?

We're renting an apartment in South Yarra. Great location and size compared to some other areas we were looking at within the same price range, so i agree, don't think it's much more expensive to rent there. However buying is obviously a different story!

Is it just that south yarra has more expensive, designer-type shops or is it more expensive to eat out etc. too?

Well I'm not blonde, don't buy designer clothes and not planning on having a car, so guess I'll have to learn to live with my lower social status! :P

A phenomenon

South Yarra is expensive and lot of young professionals live there, my friend's daughter who is a lawyer lives there.

Lot of old refurbished units there.

You can walk to the city and its close to the Tan.

Shopping is geat

Quick update since I've been living in South Yarra for 4 months now... where has the time gone?! Anyway, now I know why it's so expensive here... because the location is excellent!! Easy access (walking or trams) to the city, Botanical Gardens, Prahran market, Chapel St, Albert park... and Fawkner park is just over the road from us.

It's a great base for getting your bearings in Melbourne initially, and so handy being so close to the city. The area would definitely suit young professional couples as it's not so family orientated, which is fine for us at the moment, but doubt we'll stay here long-term.

I could do without some of the pretentious idiots this sort of area attracts! :yucky: But otherwise I'm loving it and the convenience of south yarra suits us right now :)

Hi there

Glad to hear you are enjoying South Yarra. We stayed there for a couple of months when we first arrived with a friend of a friend and it was great for getting around as we didn't have a car either.

Trouble is all those cafes on Chapel St are just toooo tempting!

Haha, how right you are Kim! And not just the cafes, but shops in general! Deadly. I love Chapel St. I would definitely consider moving closer to Prahran next...if we're not tempted by the burbs first!

Fantastic suburb. Every amenity available but not really suitable for a family because larger type houses are very expensive. However, if you're single or just a couple and you enjoy eating out then this is the suburb for you. :)
