Hi

Have been in Mt Eliza today inspecting rental properties. Love the look and feel of the place. But I have some questions. Please help.

I realise that by Aussie standards the commute to the CBD is long (I timed my commute by car at 1h 7m during an out-of-rush-hour period this afternoon). Do residents of this of Mt Eliza area actually work in or near the CBD or does just everyone think you'd be mad to do so? And if you do work central, do most people park up at Frankston station and get the train?

Second, the estate agent tells me that the kinder schools around there are good. Is that estate agent sales pitch or is there some substance.

Lastly, and perhaps most sensitively, my wife is Chinese and my daughter mixed race, and on this afternoon's tour of the village I saw no non-white people. This quite plausibly is no big deal at all, but I feel I have to check that this is so for sake of my wife and daughter's welfare - is there any history of racism (or more than you would normally expect anywhere in a western country)? Sorry, if I wasn't PC enough in phrasing this, but I have my family's welfare to think of, and I might as well get to the point.

Hi Neil

We are in Somerville, about 20 mins from Mount Eliza so I can only give my impressions. We came from London, and find the lack of non-white faces noticeable, but this is the case for the whole Peninsula not just Mt Eliza. We have a friend in Frankston with a mixed race child, and she has had no problems. Mount Eliza is an affluent area with no significant social problems, and I have certainly not heard anything adverse about racial attitudes there. It does have a reputation for being a bit snobby though, so the neighbours may be more concerned by the car you drive than your wife's racial heritage. I hope things work out well for you.

Regards

Kirsty

Hi Neil

We live in Somerville and my husband commutes to the city every day along with a lot of other people (The trains are very busy). In rush hour traffic the Monash Freeway is like a car park and you get no where very quickly so driving is out of the question. My hubby drives to Kananook and parks then gets the train. It is $181 a month for a train pass so far cheaper than using citylink and petrol.

He uses Kananook as he can get parked at 7:40am whereas Frankston is full well before then.

My hubby is also Sri Lankan and we are about to have a mixed race child (due in 5 days) opposite where we live there is also mixed race couple. I am from York in the UK and my hubby was the minority there aswell. We have lots of Australian friends and have encountered no racism apart from at one cricket game in Pearcedale where there was some slatting between teams and one of the opposition told my hubby to respect the culture. That could have been a dig at us been POM's or him being coloured but anyway hubby's team did not stand for it and they all took their beers and left the clubrooms.

Other than that we are very much accepted in the community and we are happy here.

Thanks to both Kirsty and Jo.

I've now put in an application on somewhere to rent in Mt Eliza, and yours words were very calming.
