Well, for me the choice was between Sydney and Melbourne. Although Sydney is a great city, it's really just too stressed for me: the traffic is a nightmare, house prices are crazy, crime is bad, people are too busy to be friendly etc. Melbourne is more relaxed, while still having the assets of a big city like cultural life and a buzz. The houses are lovely there, large and more affordable than Sydney: the older ones built with gold rush money are fabulous. I found the people very friendly. The climate there also suits, being not so hot and humid as other cities.

I found Perth frankly just too limited as a city, being an inner-city type person myself: it's more a town if you get my drift.

Hello

We thought Melbourne had alot to offer i.e cheaper housing, relaxed and the people are very friendly not sure if we have just been lucky but have been welcomed by the locals. We live about an hour away from the city but love to go into the city there is so much too do Victoria seems to have everything we could want really and seems a great place a for a young family.

We also looked at Brisbane but we thought that the heat all year round might not of suited as much as Melbourne's more changeable weather!

Its a huge place Chriso, you will have heaps of choice. Theres the Mornington Peninsula, the leafy South Eastern Suburbs, The Bellarine peninsula, down to Geelong.
Do you have any suburbs in mind?

We are in Patterson Lakes and really like it there are lot's of families around so it made it easy for me (Fred the red's other half!) to settle into the area.I was very nervous before we arrived that I would find it really hard not knowing anyone at all and leaving a very clsoe support network back home it seems very daunting.

I really have found at times it could be very differcult suffering with feeling homesick but I really think that because we chose a good area it made things easier my children are 18mths and 3yrs my son goes to kinder, the local gym has a creche where I ahve met quite a few people, there is also a Occasinal care centre which is great you can leave the kids for three hours for $20 and it's ideal if oyu don't have family to help out as it gives you a break. We also met lots of people at "busy kids" an indoor play centre which comes in handy if the weatehr is not good.

The schools also look very good and I would be happy to send Josh to the local school however is my husband did not work in the city we would look at Mornington or Mount Martha as they seem lovely area's and also slightly cheaper than Patterson Lakes which is really quite expensive compared to other local area's but not compared to what we paid back in England.

Hope this helps

Sorry if it is a bit long! :D

Sorry Andy, didn't want to over-expose the footie team as didn't think the Saxon Sports Centre could cope with the hoards of ex-pats descending on the place to witness the efficient, yet stylish, way Dads Army disposes of all those they face (with the obvious exception of last weeks glitch). Who needs a mega rich Russian oil tycoon to build a successful team? :shhh:

Hi there, we settled in Victoria as it was a choice between here and S. Australia (STNI visa) - we got automatic residency here so this is the one we opted for.

We've been living in Croydon N for the past 4 weeks and so far absolutely love it. We have a 17 month daughter who is so well catered for it's unreal. I think I have a great choice of play groups and activities plus the great outdoors is less that 2Ks from my doorstep.

This place is so geared to families it's exactly what we were looking for.

It's serious suburbia, incredibly green and the people are very friendly. I for one won't be returning to the UK ina hurry.

Wow a real princess!

Nice to hear your good experience princess atta. We have kids aged 8 & 11 and were getting a bit worried that there would not be enough for them to do. I'm sure this could be the case in certain areas but we were unsure what the towns and suburbs away from Melbourne were like.

Thanks for the boost.

Chris. :D

Hi Again, I forgot to mention that so many people have told me there are some really great schools in this area. One thing I have noticed about Victoria so far is that there is the option of alternative schooling - ie. Steiner Schools. I believe there are quite a few in Victoria which helps if that's your kind of thing.

As I said, we've only been here 4 weeks but have already made a few friends. Hubby has started foottie (sorry, soccer) training with a local team and now plays for them (& have a drink) and trains with them. He was feeling slightly down a few weeks ago but is now well in teh swing of things with his new 'mates'.

I've also found the locals extremely friendly. I'm still trying to get used to the checkout girls asking me how I'm doing and actually EXPECTING a reply!!!! Like you really get that in Asda on a Friday evening!!!!

Well, having done my food shopping this morning and my little girl asleep now, I think we'll go to a local lake / park this afternoon to stretch our legs and feed the ducks. Sigh! And the Ranges will be in the background towering over us!

Hope to welcome you here soon.
