Hi, were just waiting for our visa and I've sent off for my registration with nbv so how do I find contact details of melbourne hospitals and how do I contact them, email or snailmail. Also are there any nurses out there who could advise me as to which hospitals are good to work for I'm a registered adult nurse currently working on the bank at my local hospital. |

My Mrs is an A&E nurse Mel. She started over here doing Agency work for approx 18 months & obviously had hospitals she liked & others she didn't. Shes worked in both private & public hospitals. The Angliss hospital which by chance is our most local one approached her & asked if she would like a full time job. She said she would like 3 nights per week which they agreed to & she loves it. Says its far less stressful than the NHS. Have you any idea which area of Melbourne you fancy living in & I'll see what hospitals are around the area. |

Hi, Bordy, we will initially be staying with rels in Strathmore but as far as our long term plans are concerned we want to get a feel for areas ourselves when we get out there, though we do take note of whats said about areas on this forum. I have been on the seek website looking for jobs but dont know of the reputation of hospitals so I'm a bit wary, I was thinking about contacting the royal melbourne about going on the casual pool and hopefully I will get enough hours, is this a good idea? I only chose them because my cousin works in admin there and she likes it. Many thanks Mel |

mrs bordy here,
 you can join a few hospital banks around melbourne as long as they are not part of the same network, I have heard that the Royal Melbourne has a pretty good reputation as far as staff morale goes, if you are looking to stay around the city area, it's as good as any. The other thing is that once you are part of the hospital you can ask for orientation and supernumerary shifts to theatres if thats what you fancy doing, that way you can see if you like .......... and they can see if they like.......then everybody is happy. The other alternative is to join an agency, I personally found that this suited me as I could go to a hospital and get a feel for it then decide which one I preferred, this can be a little hard if you are of a sensitive disposition because just like in UK, nurses can be complete b****es here too but don't worry there is LOADS of work available. |

 hello Mrs Bordy, Which agency did you use cos I have been in contact with australian nursing solutions and they do seem like a good agency, but you cant tell untill you work for them, they didn't seem to be interested in how good I was, which is a bit of a worry, cos we get plenty of cr*p agency nurses who despite being allegedly qualified cant do obs, dont know how to check hourly urine volumes and dont write Kardex :yikes: . I work nights on the bank at the mo which suits me, I tend not to get that look of disappointment when I tip up onto a ward, but I can see how getting a taster of many hospitals can be a good thing when your new to a continent. I am very interested in the thing you said about working supernumary in theatres though. Anyway need to do dinner before night shift. Mel :thumbs up: |

hi mrs bordy again,
 the agencies are much of a muchness really, there's synergy, nursing solutions, belmore, to name a few, like I said previously it's really up to the individual how things go once you front up to a job, if you are competent, work well without supervision and keep good notes then you will get on fine, just one thing tho; do try to resist the urge to say "when I was in the UK" or "at my last hospital" (itcan be a little hard not to sometimes)if you work to your usual standards then you will certainly be asked back. About the theatre thing as I said I don't see any reason why you can't go in supernumary, in my experience management will fall over backwards to give you what you ask for if they feel it will benefit the hospital. |

Cheers for the advice Mrs Bordy, looks like all I have to do is start applying for jobs then. Good news is that NBV have taken their money for registration, so just waiting for that to come through and the visa of couse. Mel |

Hi meljor, Can sympathise entirely with "agency nurse" comments, from both sides. Have been in charge and had nurses who didn't know you could nebulise saline! But I spent 5 long years working agency as it was best for our situation. I worked ITU throught to wards and had some luke warm receptions to say the least. However when you get to go back somewhere intermittently it can be very different. Like Mrs Bordy says alot of it is down to your own personal standards of work, I ALWAYS asked politely when I didn't know their routines/protocols and work to my best, usually they then ask if you'll come back and when you do they are relieved to have a familiar face even if you are not regular staff. I'm back on an NHS bank now and it's good to work in the same hospital even though it's different departments. When/if we make it to Oz I would seriously consider agency as like Mrs Bordy says, you get to see different hospitals and pick your own hours for while which means you can sort out all the other stuff you need to do. If you go on a bank then take advantage of supernumery shifts and try out theatres, you're starting a new life, so why not a new area of nursing. Hope your visa comes through soon, and all the best with your new life! Jane |

Hi, we're still stuck in the UK waiting for our house to sell! I am an RMN (working with older adults) planning to settle in the Mornington area. Have been in touch with. a few hospitals, but could use some feedback from people who work in MH in Vic, particularly Melbourne and surrounds. |

Do they still exist, i thought ans agency had changed to malvern agency?? Other good agency is victoria nursing specialists (vns) and aseps (not sure wot this stands for). I took a job before coming to aus, as i had never not been in a job i panicked, with hindsight, i would've (a) joined a few agencies to guarantee work (b) once rental secured go onto nearest hospitals casual employment (nice to have a bit of stability), working casual means you can choose shifts and also gives you a chance to decid if you like that hospital. Dont panic about work, you will get snapped up, everywhere shouting out for nurses! If you decided on theatre i would look to the big public hosps as they offer courses and support to a new clinical area, again i am sure they would welcome you with open arms if you decided to give theatre a go.
