Hi There,

I've been offered a job in Melbourne and am trying to gather some info before I commit to the post. Will be moving with wife and 8yr old daughter, hopefully for a new start and better lifestyle. I've read a lot of the postings and no one seems to recomend the west of Melbourne to live (eg point cook and area). Does anyone know. I will be earning approx the same as I do in the UK, will the cost of living make me better or worse off.

Any advise will be helpful !

Welcome to the site Gaz.

There are a few members who live out West, I live in South East & I'm very happy here but I'm not going to criticise the West, I'm sure some people love it.

As for the wages, everyone will have an opinion, mine is your cost of living may well be about the same but your standard of living should greatly increase.

Point Cook is a big new development- bit bland for my tastes but everyone is different.
Big problem is getting into the city- nearest train station is Hoppers Crossing or you can drive and the road is at a standstill from about 7.45 to 9am.

There are a fair few places out west but closer than Point Cook- Altona Meadows, Newport, Williamstown, Spotswood etc all of which are not bad and close enough to the city.

West is more industrialised than the east city but then it is much more affordable!

Many thanks for your replies, just received confirmation this morning, that the job is mine, so OZ here we come. The company that I am going to work for is in Port Melbourne, is that any easier to get to on a morning than Melbourne itself?

Does anyone know any more places to live, around that area? Be greatfull if you could let me know.

Hope to hear from someone soon, and again many thanks

The West is a lot quieter than the East, with far less traffic. OK, so we don't have the Dandenongs but we DO have the You Yangs, all the wetland reserves by the coast and loads of other good things.

A commute from Newport to the CBD takes 15-25 mins by train, depending on which train you get, and CBD station you are going to. Yes, the traffic is busy over the Westgate bridge in the mornings, but nothing like the gridlock you get every day in Blighty.

There are some very pleasant places to live in the West, such as parts of Yarraville, Sanctuary Lakes, and virtually all of Williamstown.

The smart money says the West is the area where house prices will rise most over the coming years. House prices are definitely not as cheap this side as they were 2 years ago, and in some areas the market is pretty bouyant :) .

HTH.

Cheers & good luck!!

Many thanks Anya. We have been looking towards Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook. Have you any idea, what the schools are like. Also what would you advise, do you thinks it is a good idea to rent until you get a feel for a place or would it be better just to buy a property?

Are the people friendly in OZ? Hope so, looking to make new friends, hopefully we will be in Melbourne latest November. We have got the estate agents calling tomorrow, we are just hoping that our house will sell quickly.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Looking forward to meeting you all then! Talk about weather, I've put out and brought in my washing twice, this morning alone, bright sunshine and then pours it down for 20 mins. I bet you are all dead envious of our BRITISH SUMMER - NOT!!

The cost of living question will get you different questions depending on who you ask.

When you say you will be earning the same, what do you mean exactly?

i.e. you now earn 40K |$#"%&'()*+-./01-34:;9<=>?@ABC (bloody Aussie keyboards have no £ sign)

hang on I'll start again now I have used charmap...

You now earn £40K and will be earning $40K or
You now earn £40K and will be earning $100K

Whichever of these may have a big impact on how your cost of living will be.

Hiya

Sanctuary Lakes is very pleasant but IMO it doesn't have the village-y feel of say Yarraville & Williamstown. The houses are mostly quite new, and there are good rentals there as well as places to buy. I would imagine it's a very safe & peaceful environment for families.

We'd been here & done a longish recce trip before moving over, so we knew exactly where we wanted to live and bought a house straight away. However, if you don't get a chance to do that, getting a 6 month rental somewhere pleasant would make sense, so you get the chance to look round & decide where you *really* want to live.

No feedback for you on schools I'm afraid, as I don't have school-age kids.

As for people being friendly: I have to say that in the last year we have made far more friends that we ever did in the UK, and we get to see them a lot more, too. Melbourne is a multicultural city and so far we have friends who have moved here from NZ, Iran, Italy, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Finland, the US, Ireland, Germany, the UK, and of course, quite a few 'Aussies'! This is just through work and activities/clubs around common/shared interests.

HTH.

Cheers,
Anya

sanctuary lakes is another 'new' town, so I think is a bit unexciting..no real centre, no transport, and built around a huge golf course.

For affordable places out west, look up Spotswood, South Kingsville, Yarraville, Newport. Williamstown is lovely but very expensive.
Altona (not North or Meadows) is a nice little place.
If you are not worried about having shops and restaurants in walking distance, also look at Seaholme (very affordable houses)

The Westgate bridge is the main route into town and is a car park, but even then not on the scale of M25! It does keep moving as long as idiots don't crash on the top!

Gaz....

Is the company you are going to work for in Port Melbourne called Air International Seating Ltd.? If so, I am also on my way down under from Coventry, UK. But, same as you...I need to work out where to live; I have children at 8, 3 and 5 months!
