Hi we are new to this forum and have recently received an STNI visa for working in Melbourne. I work in IT for a large consultancy in the UK and my wife is a nursery nurse. We would love to secure at least one job before moving down to Melbourne early in the new year but have applied for loads without a single acknowledgement. Are we wasting our time applying from the UK? Can anyone advise on this and the likelihood of securing jobs from the UK. |

Hi S & S, welcome to Britvics. I'm sure you will get loads of info from here. As for your question, to be blunt its not impossible but very unlikely that the companies will even aknowledge you until your actually in Australia & can prove you have perm residency. This doesn't mean you should stop trying, which sites are you using to apply ?? |

I'd say that you will get no replies until you arrive in Aus. Then get onto mycareer.com.au, seek.com.au etc. Also, try to find recruitment consultants who specialise in your field - and get to know them. Network like hell before your leave the UK - some one you know will know people in Aus that they can introduce you to. I had an introduction to the MD of Mazda Australia who met with my wife and I personally. It did not actually lead to anything but just shows the type of doors an introduction can open for you. Unfort i'd say it is difficult to get a job before getting down there UNLESS you attend forums etc or you have skills that are relevant. BUT, and this is the good news, I similarly work for an IT Consultancy in the UK and just this week got offered a role. The company in question had people interviewing over for here for multiple roles over in Aus in multiple cities. I know they are coming back again in 6 months to do so. Let me know what type of work you are in in the Consultancy business and will see if I can help. As a point though, I have been looking for 12 months, received 3 offers (but 2 because of my own contacts and the fact I used to work down there), but it is very difficult. Proof is that it can be done, just hard! |
