Hi Laura, I saw you asking Aussie dreamer if she could reply to your post. Unfortunetly Aussie or sasha as shes better known is travelling around & doesn't get on here as much as she used to. I help run this site when Sasha is away. I don't know if we have any young members apart from yourself or not. I'm certainly no teenager, in fact my two daughters are in there early twenties now but I will gladly try & answer any questions for you or if I don't know I will try & find out for you. Feel free to ask anything about Melbourne you want. Bill. |

Schools are much the same in the way they are run Laura. You will need to wear a school uniform though. If you watch Home & Away or Neighbours you will get an idea of what the uniforms look like. You will probably find your classmates come from China, Vietnam, New Zealand etc etc as well as England. School term starts in January out here so will you be 12 by January or still 11 ? School hours can vary but most are either 8.45am to 3.15 pm or 9am to 3.30pm so much the same as UK. There are many more outdoor activities here so I hope you like sports. Also around where I live there is quite a bit of horse riding at weekends. On your first day at school you will be teamed up with a "Buddy" who will look after you & explain everything to you so don't worry to much about your first day. Bill. |

Wow you don't have long to go Laura. I know its exciting but also very scary. Believe me its 10 times more scary for your parents, even though they don't show it. I don't know if you have been to Melbourne before or not but once you settle here I'm sure you wll love it. Melbourne has some of the best shopping in Australia, even people from Sydney come to Melbourne for weekends so they can go shopping. Its a great place for star spotting to, Ive seen most of the neighbours cast, not that thats anything to boast about  Toady lives pretty close & I often see him in the pub or the video store. So good luck with everything & remember you won't be losing any friends over there. Both my daughters still stay in touch with there friends & 4 of them have been over here visiting. Bill. |

The schools here are brilliant (I work in one in Queensland at the moment) I'm not too sure if Victoria is the same as Queensland regarding when they start High School but up here you tend to start High School at year 8 (around 13 yrs old) and you can go through until you are in year 12 (you go for what is called your OP same as A levels) so for you if it is the same would work out great as you would be going up to High School knowing a few people from the State School (Primary school). That said I know a young girl who started in year 8 this year and made heaps of friends instantly plus they have loads of clubs to join so you could meet loads of people doing something like that. We're heading off down South in the middle of July this year and hopefully we are going to be following the coast road down to Adelaide so we will be following along the Great ocean Road as well as seeing some of the sites in Vitcoria. Enjoy your last few weeks in the UK and even if they are a bit sad you will soon get excited when you get on that plane and start your journey over here ;) Only down side is your parents will have quite a bit of running around to do the first few weeks but tell them to do some fun things as well :thumbs up: Sasha :) |

Hopefully we will be there late July beginning of August and don't worry I'll let you know what I think
;) I've been told when we get to Melbourne there is a brilliant themed restaurant based on Vampires!!! :o Everyone who has been to it though has said it was brilliant and is a place we must go to although it might be a bit scary for my 2 as they are only 5 and 7, so I might have to go on my own just to see what it's like! :D Sasha :) |

Hi Laura I'm Natalie, I'm 14. I moved to Geelong about 5 months ago, I'm Cazzy's daughter. I was nervous coming over too, but everyone at school is really friendly and they all love our accent so you have nothing to worry about! :D I didn't like the uniforms to start with, I go to ************ and they wear a green and white checkered dress with t-bar shoes in the summer and a long kilt, shirt and jumper in the winter (which is now). On Monday school starts at 9.05am (we get a lie in!) and finishes at 3.35pm. On Tuesday it starts at 8.35am (for school assembly) and finishes at 3.25pm. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday school starts at 8.50am and finishes at 3.10pm. You also get a locker at school which is different! :) If you've got any questions, just ask. Good luck coming over Natalie  Natalie - I've edited your post so it doesn't show your schools name just for safety reasons ;) |

Ok how come you eat all those sweets Laura yet have no fillings? By the way they don't call them sweets over here, they are known as lollies. Just to confuse you even more chips are called fries. Crisps are called chips lol. I'm sure you will get used to it. My sister was over from Scotland last year & we went in this park, on a sign at the entrance it said NO THONGS ALLOWED. Well she looked at me very strangely then burst out laughing & asked how they knew if you were wearing thongs. BUT, out here thongs are like flip flops or sandals. That park was amazing, about an hour before it started to get dark there was approx 40 kangaroos running around the swing park & jumping between some kids playing football. Its a whole differant world to what your used to over there but you will love it, especially from around November onwards when it really starts to warm up. Bill. |

Everyone calls chips "hot chips" and crisps "chips" up here with us Bordy. Calling sweets lollies still gets me every time and I find it very strange when my girls ask me for their thongs, also pants are trousers but to me they are knickers  It is all good fun though finding out all these things. Laura you'll love the new Harry Potter film as I thought it was one of the best. I wasn't born here in Australia and only moved over here just over a year ago, so it is all new and exciting for me seeing such a fabulous country that we now call home. I find the people here are just so friendly so long as you have a smile on your face plus they have the most amazing shopping malls so you can shop to your hearts content (always a winner for us girls!) :D Sasha :) |
