Hi all, We're new to this site and have been reading with interest. We've been to Melbourne a few times but haven't really had a good look around regarding where to live. We think Mornington Peninsula would be great, but also fancy the countryside and the possiblity of Eltham. We currently live in a small pretty village with a strong community feel, would really like to feel part of a village life again, but not sure if this exists anywhere around Melbourne. We have three sons, 4,6 & 8 so a good school is also essential. Husband is an accountant, but looking for work within industries rather than the CBD. Any advice for us would be great. Thanks..... |

Can't decide for you but... we have lived in Eltham for past year and it is lovely with the Yarra Valley nearby- prop prices are quite high but this is explained by being in the country but only 30mins drive (50 train) from CBD, 30 mins to airportetc. However, we have just bought in Mt Eliza ,on Morn. Pen. It is beautiful down there and next to the beach, which in summer will be a godsend(1 hr away now), and house prices seem more reasonable. OH will take longer to get to work but he is prepared to do it as he feels as tho' he's on hols when down there. You will have to visit and look for yourselves, as everyone's opinion varies. But schools are good in both areas. Happy hunting! :flag: |

If you really want that little village feel have a look at Harkaway just outside Berwick. |

Thanks to both of you for your advice. We cannot wait to get there, and looking forward to exploring the areas. I'm quite torn between wanting to be near the beach (having never lived near one before), or going for the countryside, which is what I will miss leaving here (apart from family and friends that is!). Hope to make lots of new friends there though. Bye for now. |

Guys just remember that there is a difference between enjoying living "near" the beach versus right on the beach. A view is more important than being right on the beach - 20 years of rusting cars and painting weatherboard panels has changed the appeal. Move a few streets/suburbs back and enjoy the proximity but not the hassle. The great thing about this site is you learn about other areas you never would know exist unless you are sad like me and browse the melways. Kiwi |

Hya! We´re a couple from Iceland going to study at NMIT´s (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Fairfield campus starting february 2008. We´d like to know if we should be looking at houses in Fairfield or somewhere else? How´s your rate on Fairfield, any near suburbs/neighbourhoods that are nicer? Don´t want to live too far from school. We are hoping to rent a unit and we are bringing our cat. ANY advice would be helpful. Thanx! :flower: |

Carlton is nice http://www.nowwhereroute.com/tourismvic/Ro...GoButton=Create Close to the CBD and nightlife. Close to main concentration of Italian cafes and restaurants. |
