Welcome to the site Zoe. September is a good time to come out & we should be starting the Britvics meet ups again not long after that seeing as Winter will be just about over.

Hi, :waving:
We are Andrea and Kevin. We came 6 years ago and live in Werribee :mate:
He is the Brit and meanwhile also Aussie citizen, I am German and a permanent resident - Germany somehow does not take too kindly to adding citizenships.
We'd love to meet other people, especially those living in the West.
Cheers

Your not the only German on Britvics, we have another lovely German on here although I think shes from the Eastern side.

Thanks for the welcome. Looks like "Poms" and "Krauts" (though I hate sauerkraut, but could not think of another German nickname) make a good couple mixture. Most Germans I have encountered live in the East. DH's sister has emigrated to the west some 20 years now and this is how we ended up in Werribee in the first place and then decided to stay.

Hiya

Myself, my husband and my 13 year old son (and the 2 dogs!) are moving to Melbourne at the end of the month. We will be living in Kew for the first month and then down in Sth Frankston for a while until we find something a bit more permanent. We are hoping to finally settle in Mt Eliza so any info on the area would be great.

Just trying to work out what we are going to need to bring - aaarrgh!! Any tips?

Welcome to Britvics Mandy.
Mount Eliza is a lovely area. There are quite a few members from the peninsula area & I don't know any that are unhappy with it.

Good luck, I know its all very exciting but also very stressful. Feel free to vent in the general discussion area of Britvics.

Hi, we are the Thurleys, mum, dad Charlie (almost 4) and Eden (6 months). Seriously considering a new life in Melbourne. We already have friends and family there and very much want the best childhood for our little ones. Hoping for advice on reputable visa application companies and advise on getting work once there, especially with current climate. Can someone also let me know approx cost to pay for emigration company to process visa and also when you pay 2nd visa installment, if application successful. This is all new so any advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks and hope to be a fully fledged BritVic one day.

Hi Thurleys :waving: I think work is a difficult question without knowing what line of work you're talking about. IMO that's probably worth starting a topic of its own in the main General Discussion bit of the forum where you can go into what sort of work, and with so many Britivics all doing different things there's a fair chance someone will either be in the same sort of job and know the answer or at least be close enough to have a fair idea. All that can be said at the moment is that Melbourne hasn't been unaffected by the global financial waaah waaah but it, and Australia generally, seems to have been less affected than places like the UK. I think we are technically in a recession but it doesn't really feel like it, while when Amanda was back in the UK recently she said it felt grim and depressing with al the closures and bad news in the media all the time.

To answer your other question we used a migration agency called Migration Matters (www.migrationmatters.com) for my visa. I seem to remember that they were in the middle somewhere price wise, but what attracted us was that they seemed the most professional and knowledgeable on the phone. Turned out that the girl we dealt with and a couple of the other girls all used to work for Aussie Immigration on the visa appeals before they started up their visa agency, so they knew what sort of things to say on the form and how to say them to get the visa approved. They were very helpful and really efficient, and my visa was approved like the clappers. Can't remember costs but since it was four years ago they'd no doubt have changed anyway, but I'd highly recommend you get in touch with them. Otherwise the golden rule is to stick to MARA approved agents (which Migration Matters is of course).

Good luck.

Hi we're the Cooper's from Birmingham, UK. My wife is a nurse and we have recently been granted a perminant residency visas. We are also bringing our 2 children aged 13 and 17. We're arriving mid-Nov09 and plan on living in the Frankston South area, if it's as nice as it sounds. We are going to rent for the first month in Mornington until out container arrives as we are struggling to find any reasonably priced short-term rentals in Frankston. I work in IT and am hoping to move with my company as we have an office in Melbourne, but failing that I'm coming anyway and will sort out work when I get here....hopefully!
All very exciting, but equally worrying, that's part of the deal though! Time dragging now and just want to get out there asap as we've sold our house already. We're currently renting the house next door to it which is quite weird, especially after the security of owning our own house for nearly 20 years! Must be the shortest/farthest successive house move combinations ever.
Anyway, counting the days and praying Franston South is as nice as it seems!
Mark.

Thanks Petals, music to my ears! I was worried it might be a little too far from Melbourne itself, but there's nowhere significantly closer I like and can afford.

Just wanted to say hi coopercav :waving: We are from the Midlands but hubby worked in and around Birmingham for a number of years before we moved to Oz. We have friends from Erdington who are hoping to be in Melbourne at the beginning of next year. They did a reccy last year and stayed in Frankston South so think they may be looking at living around there too.
Good luck with everything and if we can be of any help, just shout :waving:

Hi
Congratulations. We are from Manchester but my hubbie worked in Birmingham before we left 5 years ago. We now live in Langwarrin which is 1 suburb inland from Frankston, and have a 18 year old and a 12 year old. I work as a nurse in the local area so if I can help with info re nursing let me know. Frankston South is a nice area to live and as long as you choose carefully you should be zoned for Frankston High which is a good high school for the 13 year old.
Enjoy
Justine

Hi,

My name is Paul Cox (23), I've been hanging around here for a bit but as I am now in Australia and looking to get to Melbourne in the next few weeks I thought I should introduce myself properly.

I've been travelling around Australia, well from Sydney to Cairns, for the past 6 months and arrive in Melbourne in 2 weeks time, where I am looking to try and get some work for the next 5 - 6 months. Although if all goes well then I am looking to try and come back out here afterwards to give it a go for a few years or more.

I graduated from University of York with a First in Computer Science and Maths last summer and had been working in London for 7 months before coming out here.

Any help with work would be greatly appreciated as I am getting very low on money now! Preferably some computing work, most programming/ web design, although any work will do me for the moment!

Any information on renting would also be very helpful, as want to get out of staying in hostels, to save money and extra comfort!

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the kind thoughts and offer of help. We're only a couple of miles from Erdington as it happens.
Not long now, just wanna be there, time is dragging a little.

Hi! Myself, my husband and 14 year old son are hoping to move to Berwick next year. We moved from the UK over 3 years ago to North Queensland which we actually love, but for various reasons Melbourne is where we need to be in the future. We've just had 3 fantastic weeks staying in Berwick, Frankston and the CBD checking out the best place for our family and thought Berwick and Mornington were both lovely. Visited hevs and DollyDaydream too...hevs at very short notice lol!!!

Hello everyone,
We arrived last Nov and I think we are still in shock! We (Simon & Lin) came over in the June for 2 weeks (first time in Aus), had 4 interviews and offered 4 jobs (well, Simon was!). Decided to work in Williamstown and went back to the UK to sort things out thinking we would be over here in about 18 months. Things moved FAST and we had to sell our house at a big loss, arrange for homes for animals, sort out bringing over a dog and a classic car all in 4 months. We hit the ground running, lived in Williamstown for a couple of weeks, found a rental in Altona and went house hunting. We moved into this house in February (Altona Meadows) and love it. Also have Permanent Residency now.
It has been hard leaving behind all the family (parents, 3 daughters and grandson) but have had a visit from one daughter and expecting her back at Xmas. Also had a visit from a long lost cousin who lives in Sydney!
We added to our family with a puppy to keep the other dog company and to give me more cleaning to do as I can't find work! I am seen most days between Altona Meadows and Williamstown with two crazy spaniels.
In a bit of a worry at the moment as OH's company have to make redundancies so I have upped my job hunting and keeping everything crossed. We are determined not to go back to the UK.
Anyway, that is us so far. So much has happened in such a short time and we are loving it here. We didn't come for the sun and sand so this area is suiting us fine (apart from the wind!) but the beaches are great for the dogs and safe for kids.
The dogs are shouting to go out. If anyone sees me please stop for a chat as I don't know that many people - it is hard with no job and no kids to get out and mix - I'm a bit shy too so that doesn't help!
Lin
PS Simon originally from Birmingham (Great Barr) and I'm from all over - dad in the RAF then married into the RAF (mad woman!)

Hi

Firstly a big thankyou to everyone who has contributed on this board and the wiki. You certainly make life easier for the rest of us with so many questions.

My 13 year old son and I are moving to Oz in January. For me I can say move back home, I have been living in the UK for all my adult life after leaving Australia on a working holiday and always intended going back. My son hit the big 12 and I thought if we don't go back soon it will be harder for him to consider Australia as his home.

So I've thrown caution to the wind, given my resignation in on my perfect job that I absolutely love and will be arriving homeless and jobless like so many others. Although we don't have any family living in the area, we are looking at moving to Parkdale area. It seems like the best compromise between being close enough to the city but not too far away with train link, nice residential area, close to the beach and not too far for family to visit. Not to mention all those from around this area on the board seem to be really happy there.

So we are now going through the motions of husband applying for residency, me applying for British citizenship before I go, housing, schools, what to sell/keep, flights, trying to complete everything at work before I go and watching the exchange rate without my eyes bulging too much.

I really can't wait to go for that first walk along the beach when the day has been just to darn hot to bear. Although I'm sure I will whinge about the heat, just like I am starting to whinge about the cold!!!

Thanks all,
Julie

Hello,

Just wanted to introduce ourselves. We are The Warren's and are due to arrive in Melbourne on Nov 14th with our 15 month old son. We will be staying with an uncle initially but hope to find a rental as soon as we find our way around! No jobs lined up yet and we don't really know anyone but hoping that will change soon. Am sure we will have some questions along the way.
