Hi, My partner and I (28 and 26) are moving in August 2010 from the north east of England on a state sponsored visa. I am a Pharmacist and my partner, Barry is an electrician. Not sure where to live yet, but we want to be near the sea as we are also bringing our labrador with us! We have looked at Mornington area, but have also thought about Torquay area. any suggestions would be great!! We are coming out in feb 2010 again, so would like to meet up with some of you as I am concerned about being lonely once we actually make the move. any info/help about areas to live would be great!! thank you Vanessa |

Beer sounds good as we've been running around like crazy between real estate agents, car showrooms & shops! Landed yesterday and all good so far. Lovely coast at mornington & frankston. Found stuff generally same price or less. Crazy few days but looking forward to weekend. Look forward to meeting up with you guys soon. M |

Hi. We used Petair & chose the gold package. They do just about everything and little difference between this & doing most of the form filling yourself. I'll post back when we know more of how they got on with the flight & quarantine. M |

Hi All Just popped in to introduce ourselves :waving: We're hoping to be in Melbourne sometime this year; we've had our visas since Jan 2008 and validated in Perth in July last year - didn't think too much of Perth so turned our attentions to Melbourne which we feel will offer us so much more as a family. Wishing you all a Happy New Year. Kari x |

Hi, I moved to Brighton, Melbourne with my husband Giles (34) and 4 year old son Isaac in November 2009 from Bristol, UK. We are moving into a house next week and I am keen to meet people who also live in Bayside now that we have decided to settle in this area. Would love to also find friends for Isaac to play with when he's not in Kinder. My name is Sarah and I'm 31, used to work in Human Resources but currently taking time out to spend with Isaac before he goes to school next year. Giles is a Business Development Manager and starts his new job on Monday so Isaac and I will be available for coffee and play dates if anyone is interested? Thanks, take care, Sarah |

My name is Jon and I will be making my way over to Melbourne in the next 4 weeks (when my visa is sorted). I am 36 and will be moving over by myself (and as such will know precisely nobody in Melbourne :-). I am transferring with my company and have initially signed up for two years. I am looking forwards to leaving the snow behind.... I would appreciate some advice on where to live (I will be in serviced accommodation for the 1st month). Ideally, I would like to live somewhere where: - there is a good public transport link to the CBD - It is easy to get out of town in to the countryside at the weekend - I am close to the seafront - There are some reasonable cafes/bars within walking distance. If anyone has any thoughts I would most grateful for them. Also, if there are any events where everyone meets up for a beer etc I would love to come along. Finally, if there are any divers or fishers on the forum I would love to find out what the diving/fishing is like in Melbourne!! |

Hi Jon. In no particular order there are several meet ups a year where you can just show up and meet other Britvics. Often they'll be in a park somewhere and everyone brings their own picnic stuff, though often it'll have a public barbecue handy so people will bring chops and steak and sausages etc. But there are also meet ups for a drink in the CBD now and again. There seems to be a lively book swapping and cake eating club going on among some of the Britvic ladies but I get the impression it's not women only - providing you bring a good book and spring for a cake  Can't remember who it is but someone in the forum took up diving and posted a few underwater photographs. Don't know if anyone fishes but I'd have thought someone must be into it. If I were you I'd start a topic in the main bit of the general discussion forum and put diving and fishing in the title. Where to live - tricky. Plenty of suburbs have little pockets here and there with neighbourhood shops and cafes, and being as the metro area wraps more than halfway around the bay there's plenty of Melbourne that's close to the water. But the getting out of the city part... how easy is easy? For that matter what do you call a good connection to the CBD? For one person it's under an hour, for another it's half that. And then there's the obvious issue of your budget and what's the next best alternative if your ideal suburb is everybody else's too and has become a bit on the pricey side. What I can say is that the near the seafront requirement probably means between the beach and the freeway either on the north eastern side of the bay or perhaps Williamstown over on the other side and the newer suburbs west of there. Those new suburbs in the west are obviously handy for a quick exit to the countryside. On the eastern side of the bay anywhere between the coast and the Monash freeway would be as good. The downside with the newer suburbs is that some feel they can be a little soulless. There may be small neighbourhood shops and cafes about but they don't feel quite the same as the ones that have been around for donkey's years in the older suburbs. Not a big deal for me personally but for some it might mean a preference for older burbs on the eastern side. Beyond that, and I appreciate that's all pretty vague, I can only suggest you think about how long your normal max commute would be and how long it should take you to get out of town, then try to work out from the Metlink site what suburbs fit your desired travel time and, perhaps using Google Earth or something to see where the freeways and main roads are, suss out which of those are handy for getting out of town and are also close to the bay. Then you can start posting questions in Britvics to see if anyone knows what the local cafes are like in them. Then with luck you'll have a shortlist to check out in your spare time as soon as you get here. Good luck, A&S. |

Hi Julie, Sounds just like us, the cats, 3 days in Singapore, then Mornington, just like ourselves all of 2 months ago! All good choices even with hindsight, congrats on taking the plunge! Enjoy the fairwell parties & meals & drinks, they'll wear you out. Before you know it you'll be sitting on Mills beach saying to yourself "I live here"! Anyway, feel free to PM us if you need anything now or when you arrive or if you want some one to show you around when you get here. Mark, Karen & family. |
