Hello,

We are new to the site but have gained sooooooooooooo much from simply reading everyones posts - Thank you !!

We are looking at Wodonga/Albury as a place to settle.

We have no need to be close to Melbourne and so decided to look a little further a field (cheaper housing and all that)
We are looking for a fairly large town with good facilities, good schools and hospitals but we don't want to end up too isolated !

I am a midwife and hubby is a nurse so we figured we are fairly flexible with regard to work and would consider all locations.
Wodonga looks as if it is ticking most boxes but we would be really grateful of any thoughts or suggestions.
Is it a good choice ?

Hope someone can help !

Thank U

First of all welcome to the site & I'm glad you have found it useful.

Ive never been that far up but I guy I work with was brought up in Wodonga & speaks very highly of it.
I know it can get quite hot up there because when they show the daily Temperatures for Victoria often the hottest conditions are around Albury/ Wodonga so as long as you like the heat.

I don't think we have any members from up that way but I'm sure some have been through the towns, hopefully someone will give you a better answer soon.

My OH has an uncle living in Albury and we went to visit there last October. WE really enjoyed it.His aunt works in the admin/reception dept for one of the hospitals. The only thing that would concern me living there is the drought that is affecting Lake Hume. When we there it was extremly low, infact we drove down to areas that used used to be covered by the water.
Other than that living in that area is really good. Its around 3 hours drive to Melbourne but flying would be quicker if you need to get to Melbourne in a hurry.
Sydney is roughly 6 hours away.
There are so many places that offer superb scenary and off course you arn't far from some of the wineries at Rutherglen.
Ive got lots of website links for the area and would be happy to give you these links if you are interested.
Im not on the forum much as im busy studying but if you PM me and i will help if i can. Nicky on here lives in Wangarrata which is an hour away from Albury /Wodonga so im sure she would also be able to offer some assistance to.

Wow, thank you for such rapid replies !

I will aim to pm you Mandy - cheers !

Sounds cool to be able to access Melbourne and Sydney fairly easily.

Should I be concerned about the drought and water level of lake Hume ?
I can do heat but I doubt that I could do dehydration so well !

I've had a good look at the Wodonga hospital web site and it looks really great - seems as if they have vacancies as well !
Only 1.700 deliveries a year so a 'walk in the park' for me !
Hubby is looking at community nursing and options look pretty favourable.

One question we have is regarding tourism.
Is there much of it up there ?

Hubby is keen to look at a career change and is wondering about starting B & B or the such like.
We have read that Wodonga is an area that people retire to - any body know ?
If so, we may have to look at elderly care rather than tourism !

Greatful for any info

Cadders xx
