Advice on Visa; Secondary school maths teacher

I have been offered a job in Melbourne on a 457 visa for the australian arm of my company. So that covers me and my family. My wife's ex, who still plays a great part in the children's life would like to also come across independantly at the same time. He's a 37 year old secondary school maths teacher who's been teaching in a good UK independant school for a couple of years now.

We've seen on the Victoria web site that Secondary school maths is an in demand occupation (on STNI) and an Aussie friend in Melbourne (who recommended your site) has said that this should thus be not too difficult. The trick here is not to end up with us accepting and a later rejection of his visa thus causing a prologed separation from his children.

So we need to know the likelyhood. Secondary to that what are the timescales for a descision ?

Any help really appreciated
