Advice on where to live; Melbourne with teenagers

Hi we're looking to move later this year for 2 years to Melbourne. My office will be in Box Hill and so would love to hear any advice on good areas to live. I currently in the UK drive / train 40 mins to work so am fairly happy to get the same kind of commute.

Ideally we don't want to live too far out as we've got teenage children who will want to be independant. Thus a sleepy area will not be top of their list and likewise good public transport in and out of any social areas is a must.

Our first thoughts would be to live south of Box hill towards the bay somewhere if that's not too horrendously expensive.

Any ideas ?

As most people will tell you, looking before you actually move down under is very difficult. Do you have time when you come over to spend a month or so to look around before you settle somewhere more permanent ?

You mention not wanting to move too far out, but in our sleepy village (population 5000) my boys (9&12) have loads of friends, although we do need to run them about a little bit, they play at the local footy club, basketball, cubs & scouts, both boys now love motocross (quite a few friends have their own tracks in the back garden, but there are also plenty of local tracksthey can use) local pool, skate park, and plenty of locals with dams/pools to swim in & only 45 mins from plenty of beaches, and 10 minutes from dozens of national parks/picnic areas. Its not as boring as you might thing for independant teenagers. Buses are easy, and the closest train station is a good 10 minutes drive.

Unfortunately I dont know enough of the other city areas to give good advice, but there are quite a few of us expats living on the edge of the city in various places, and there is still soooo much to do for all ages, and its definitely a lot more affordable than the city.

I know this post probably doesnt help you that much, but we are really pleased we chose for the "sleepy" option, and its definitely not as bad as you might think.

That seems ages ago since I posted that - thanks for the reply though! We've been out here for 7 months now and settled on Balwyn as it's close to the office and just within the tram lines. It is pricier than we had hoped for, but pays off with some good schools. We're waiting for the East link to open for some really fast access to the Mornington but on the whole not too bad.

I think if we had our choice again we may well have thought of getting somewhere further out, and definitely if we stay we would as it's too expensive to buy round us. Eltham, Warrandyte would be two of the options

When I posted, I was sure you guys where over here already, but I saw the April date, and didnt think any more.

I didnt notice it was 2007. ooops.

Hope you have settled OK, and the kids are enjoying themselves. We are at 9 months now, and have no real regrets.
