This has probably been asked a million times before but...... We're looking to move in September time and so I'm looking into schools for our children. The eldest (15) we're well advanced in trying to get a private school place on an IB diploma. The other's will be 12,12, and 10 all boys and we want to send to a good state school. Our initial searching for a house is centering down the east side (Caulfield, Bentleigh, Ormond, Moorabinn, Cheltenham). Has anyone got any comments on a) the areas B) any good schools in the area too ? Many thanks in advance |

All good areas for schooling - Try Mentone Grammar or Hailsbury You might also try Camberwell Balwyn areas - these are further north but somewhat closer to CBD. Our area (Toorak/Armadale/Malvern) has very good schools but mainly private - several public but these are primary not high school level. |

One of the best state schools in that area is McKinnon Secondary College but hard to get into unless you are in catchment and house prices/rent are higher in that catchment area. There are other ways to get in but slim - maybe scholarship and they are also a very musical school. Our son is in year 10 at Bentleigh Secondary which is also good. My only complaint about state schools I have come across is that there does not seem to be much sport which we were surprised about for Australia. If they are into sport anyway it is not such a problem as more than likely that they will be at a club but in UK our son had sport every day and here is only one double period per week. |

Thanks for that - yes -I'd noticed McKinnon as a big school in the area (we have a copy of Melways which is invaluable). Will check out the others. really kind of you to reply. |
